Wordle hints (game #1411) – clue #2 – first letter

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1411) is… IDLER.
Told you there would be an ER word soon!
Yes, after 41 games (not the longest ever gap ever, but not far off it) we have another example of Wordle’s most-hated format. Well, most hated by some; I have my own Wordle nemesis, in the form of OO words.
And it’s a difficult one, as they almost always are. Maybe not as difficult as I made it seem, admittedly, but WordleBot matched my five, and it’s not often that we both score so poorly.
The overall average of 4.2 is actually misleading, because the most popular of all of the best Wordle start words, ADIEU, left only two possible solutions. That word is played by around 7% of all Wordlers, so that will have massively skewed the result; for everyone else, I reckon it will have played more like a 4.5 or 4.6 answer.
What happened to me? Well, it was a mixed bag. My skill score of only 68 might tell part of the story – it definitely wasn’t a perfect game for me – but was also massively unfair, I think. See what you reckon.
I began with an average result for SHREW, which gave me a yellow R and green E and left 186 possibles.
Next up, I played VALOR – which might seem slightly odd, but there was a strategy behind it.
I strongly suspected that it was an ER word, but the E was already green, so I could leave that out. I needed to turn the R green too, though, so playing it at the end made sense. I’d want a couple of vowels – so A and O – and a common letter in L. And the V? Well, I was aware that V is a strangely common letter among ER words, so figured I’d try it.
WordleBot said it was a “wonderful” choice and also incredibly lucky, and it cut my shortlist to four. However, as is often the case, I had not found them all.
And here’s where I take issue with the ‘Bot. My list had two: RULER and TILER. WordleBot’s had four: RULER, MILER, FILER and IDLER.
So what gives there? I hadn’t already played T, so why was TILER not an option? And were were the far less common words FILER and MILER considered good choices instead? TILER is a perfectly acceptable word – and in fact it even appears in WordleBot’s own list of the best start words, and fairly high up! It’s madness.
With the two words that I had identified, playing RULER made sense. It was wrong, sure, but I was able to play TILER next for what I thought would be a four.
Only that was wrong too. So I looked again and spotted IDLER, and had to settle for that five. But frustratingly, the ‘Bot awarded me only a 55/99 skill score for RULER and 35/99 for TILER – and as I said above, it didn’t include TILER among its possible answers.
So in summary: difficult word, not a great game by me, but THE BOT IS BEING TOTALLY UNFAIR WITH MY SKILL SCORE. But by all means tell me below if you think I’m just being a sore loser.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1410)
In a different time zone where it’s still Tuesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1410, too.
- Wordle yesterday had a vowel in one place.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was B.
B is a very, very common starting letter in Wordle. In fact, it’s the third most common overall, behind only S and C.
- There were repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was S.
S is really not a common ending letter at all – mainly because Wordle generally doesn’t allow plurals. It’s the 15th most likely letter to appear at the end of an answer.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1410)
- NYT average score: 3.7
- My score: 4
- WordleBot’s score: 3
- My skill score: 82
- My luck score: 57
- My start word performance: IDIOT (163 remaining answers)
- WordleBot’s start word performance: CRANE (356)
- Tomorrow’s start word: SHREW
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1410) was… BLISS.
Though BLISS has yet another repeated letter – the third in a row and sixth in seven days – it’s not as difficult as the others have been.
WordleBot says it has an average score of 3.7, well below the norm for the game, although I suspect it will rise a little over the next few hours as more people play. But I’m pretty sure it won’t get above 4.0, and certainly not up to the level of Monday’s DUMMY (4.4).
As to why people are finding it easier to solve, my guess is that the performance of several of the best Wordle start words will have skewed things here.
Evidence? Well, SLATE, the seventh most popular start word, left only six possible solutions. RAISE and ARISE – fifth and sixth respectively – left a dozen. Together, those three words account for about 7% of all players, and many of those will have scored a three or even a two, bringing down the overall average.
But even outside of that, BLISS contains more common letters than either DUMMY or the previous day’s WEEDY, with B the third most likely starting letter, and L, I and S all in the top 10 overall.
I began with IDIOT, a start word chosen at random but which accurately describes my opinion of myself after today’s game.
IDIOT gave me a green I, and left 163 words. I left out the I for my second guess, in favor of including an extra letter; SNARE was chosen purely on account of its common letters, but WordleBot loved it and awarded me 99/99 for skill. It was incredibly lucky, in that it left only three words. So far, so good.
And then I screwed up. Somehow I missed that I had already played the letter R, so drew up my own shortlist of CRISP, FRISK, BLISS and WHISK. In reality, those latter two were real options, as was PHISH (which I missed).
So, for my third guess I went with FRISK – figuring that it might be the answer, and would also choose between my other three. But this was entirely misplaced logic, because FRISK couldn’t be the answer, and I should have played WHISK.
Ah well. FRISK was wrong, but the 50/50 it left was between BLISS and PHISH, and I still hadn’t thought of the latter. So I played the first of those and scored an undeserved four.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2025.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren’t in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.
