* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?
• The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is W.
W is a fairly average letter when it comes to starting an answer. There are 82 solutions that begin with a W, with means that it ranks 13th – so right in the middle of the alphabet.
Wordle hints (game #1413) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1413) is… WHOSE.
Phew! I was back on form today, and thank heavens for that. After a run of three fives and two fours I was desperately in need of a three, and WHOSE was a nice, obliging word to turn up.
Not that everyone is finding it easy; it has an average score of 3.9, which is about standard for the game but nowhere near as low as yesterday’s ADEPT, which finished at 3.5.
Letter-wise, too, it’s harder than ADEPT; O, S and E are very common of course, but S is not in its most likely position at the start of a word.
W and H, meanwhile, are both in the bottom half of the frequency table; H is 14th overall and W is 21st.
Together, at the start of a word, they are more common – the WH pairing is 46th and occurs 18 times among the original 2,309 solutions. That may not sound too high, but there are 215 opening combos overall, so it’s firmly in the top 25%.
My game began with an average first guess, HABIT, which left 101 solutions. But it gave me a yellow H, and I got lucky when it came to placing it in my second attempt.
There are three letters an H typically goes with – S, T and C. Playing CHOSE enabled me to cover two of those – the T was already ruled out – while also including a couple of very common vowels.
And it was incredibly lucky, giving me four green letters in the format -HOSE. There was only one word left, WHOSE, so I was able to play that next for my three.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1412)
In a different time zone where it’s still Thursday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1412, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was A.
A is a reasonably common starting letter in Wordle: 140 games begin with this letter. It ranks 6th among starting letters, behind S, C, B, T and P.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was T.
T is a very common letter to end a Wordle answer – in fact only E and Y are more likely in that position.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1412) was… ADEPT.
Oh dear. If I was a little unlucky on Wednesday, then yesterday my poor score was all my own fault.
And that’s frustrating, because ADEPT is not a particularly tough Wordle. WordleBot says it has an average score of 3.5, making it one of the easiest in weeks.
Nor is that a surprise; letter wise, it has three very common and two fairly common ones, plus the most popular start word, ADIEU, once again made major inroads towards solving it. On Wednesday, it left only two possible solutions, yesterday it was five – but you’d still expect to get home in three guesses with that kind of a start.
My opener, DRIED, was pretty decent itself (albeit not in the same league as ADIEU) and left 43 options. But that was about as good as it got for me.
My second guess was LODGE, which was… fine. Not great, but not terrible. It didn’t turn either of my yellow letters green, and still left eight answers.
I found six – SEEDY, NEEDY, WEEDY, HEADY, BEADY and BENDY – but immediately dismissed WEEDY, because that was an answer last week and I didn’t need to consult a past Wordle answers list to remember that.
With those words in mind, I played BEADY – which might have left a 50/50, but which would otherwise give me the solution.
However, I’d missed two words, and one of them was ADEPT (the other, less likely, was EDEMA). That meant that my logic was skewed and this really hurt me on the next guess.
BEADY reduced my possible answers list to two, but the trouble was these were the two I hadn’t found, ADEPT and EDEMA. But for some ridiculous reason I thought AMEND was an option – even though I already knew D could not be at the end.
If I hadn’t made that mistake, I’m sure I’d have looked a little longer, found ADEPT, and scored a four. As it was I needed one more guess, and had to endure the ‘Bot pointing out my mistake. What an idiot.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2025.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren’t in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.
