Wordle hints (game #1438) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has a vowel in one place*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #1438) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is S.

S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. In fact, it’s almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.

Wordle hints (game #1438) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #1438) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is T.

T is a very common letter to end a Wordle answer – in fact only E and Y are more likely in that position.

Wordle hints (game #1438) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1438) is… SPORT.

I love watching SPORT. Soccer, for instance, although I might take a little break after my beloved Coventry City lost in the playoffs this year. Cricket and F1, for sure. A bit of rugby union, golf, or tennis on occasion. I’m not so hot on US sports – but I’ve enjoyed the odd NBA game.

I used to love playing it, too – when I was young and in good shape. I was never any good at it though. In fact, I was legendarily bad; I once contrived to score a hat-trick of own goals in a soccer game (which, in fairness, we lost 17-0, so it wasn’t all my fault).

My performance at Wordle today was not quite as poor as that (is Wordle a SPORT? Probably not), but this was another frustrating game all the same. I feel like I couldn’t really have done much more, but had to settle for a below-par score anyway.

As with yesterday’s DRONE (see below), it has a very low average score; 3.5 at the time of writing. And also as with yesterday’s game, it features four ultra-common letters and one that’s in the middle (P in this case). There were no particular threats here, and plenty of threes available for the taking.

That was beyond me, though – and despite an incredibly lucky start. SWORD, chosen at random, left only 14 options, and with S-OR- already in place I had a clear idea of what I needed to do.

Essentially, that was to find the letters that could go between S and O: P gave me SPORT, SPORE and SPORK, T led to STORK, STORM, STORE and STORY, H was SHORE and SHORT, C served up SCORE and SCORN, and N provided SNORE and SNORT.

That have me 13 of the 14 possibles, with the only one I missed being SHORN. A decent effort, for once.

I worked out that I should play TENCH next, because it contained the T, N, C and H that might go between the S and O, plus the E that ended several of them. This was exactly what WordleBot said it would have done too, but it was unlucky and still left four words.

These were STORM, STORK, STORY and SPORT, and unfortunately I needed another narrowing down word to chose between them. This time I went with EMPTY, and it pointed the way to SPORT for a four.

It wasn’t my best result ever, but it was certainly better than any of my soccer performances 35 years ago.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1437)

In a different time zone where it’s still Monday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1437, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was D.

D is the ninth most common starting letter in the game, so maybe slightly less likely than you might expect.

  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was E.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1437)

  • NYT average score: 3.4
  • My score: 3
  • WordleBot’s score: 3
  • My skill score: 98
  • My luck score: 65
  • My start word performance: PULSE (158 remaining answers)
  • WordleBot’s start word performance: CRANE (5)
  • Tomorrow’s start word: SWORD

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1437) was… DRONE.

Here’s an easy Wordle for you, courtesy of a word that contains four common letters in common positions. R, O, N and E are all in the top 10 letters by frequency, and in the case of R, N and E they appear here in their most likely position. If you played the odds today, you’ll probably have done well.

What’s more, the fifth letter – D – is not exactly rare either, and is in the top 10 among start letters.

All of which explains why the average is only 3.4 – a fact which makes it one of the easiest games this year.

It’s unlikely to have caused anyone many problems, although a few people did play the likes of PRONE, CRONE and DROVE and so may have ended up with fours or fives rather than the three that many will have got. Those of you who began with CRANE, meanwhile, may even have scored a two; that opener left only six possible answers.

As a measure of how straightforward it was, my opening PULSE left 158 words, but I still managed a three. That was because I followed up with TRAIN, and that cut my shortlist to two: CRONE and DRONE.

I wasn’t 100% certain that CRONE had been a past Wordle answer, but I had a strong hunch that it had been, so went with DRONE and got it right. I checked the list after I’d finished and confirmed that yes, CRONE was a solution – in July 2023 – so I never even had any jeopardy here, even if I thought that I might have done.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2025.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.

12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren’t in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.
