Today’s Wordle answer (game #1530) is… TOWER.
More than a month has passed since our last ER solution, namely the super-tough GOFER in late July. TOWER is theoretically far easier than that word, in that it currently has an average score of 3.9 versus a monumentally high 5.6 for GOFER. So why is that?
Well, three of the letters are identical: they both have the -O-ER format. So the difference must lay in the T and W of TOWER against the G and F of GOFER – and the words themselves.
My instinct is that the T is the single biggest factor here. Many of the best Wordle start words include a T, not least WordleBot’s favored SLATE and the ever-popular STARE.
Even those people who began with a different word, for instance CRANE or AUDIO, will have been likely to have included a T in a second guess, because it’s simply a very common letter. The G and F in GOFER, meanwhile, are not found in many popular start words, and are not common choices to be played on the second round either.
Against that, the W in TOWER is less common than G or F – but equally, once you’d found the T and established that this was an -O-ER word, your options will have been limited to TO-ER or -OTER, and there are not too many of either.
Unfortunately, I didn’t play the letter T until the fourth guess, an oversight that led to my below-par score of five – my first for 10 games after an excellent run that’s included seven 3/6s.
I wasn’t helped much by my randomly chosen opener ANNOY, which gave me only a single yellow O and left 392 options. I fared better on the second, though, where SCORE added the R and E into the mix and immediately suggested that this would be an ER word.
At that point I set about listing as many of those as I could find, and came up with 24 of them. WordleBot suggested later that I had 40 to find at this stage, but some – for instance OILER and OGLER – seem unlikely, while others were ED words that I don’t believe will be solutions.
There were also a few that I knew had been past Wordle answers, including BOXER and JOKER, so I discounted them and decided that VOWEL would be my best third guess.
With hindsight, I could have done better here. The V was designed to rule in/out the likes of MOVER and VOTER, while the W was in MOWER and TOWER and the L in LOVER and LOWER, among others. I also kept the O and E in, so that I could confirm this was indeed an -O-ER game.
VOWEL worked fairly well, but still left me with six options: TOWER, POWER, MOWER, ROWER, BOWER and – according to the ‘Bot – ROWED. The latter wasn’t on my list, but the other five were.
I knew that ROWER had appeared before (in January this year) and was also pretty sure about POWER (correctly; it appeared in 2022). So I played TEMPS and when the T turned green knew that TOWER was the solution. It took me a while, but I got there in the end.
Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1529)
In a different time zone where it’s still Tuesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1529, too.

A is a reasonably common starting letter in Wordle: 140 games begin with this letter. It ranks 6th among starting letters, behind S, C, B, T and P.
- There were repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

X is the sixth least likely ending letter in Wordle – and today’s game is one of only eight in which it finishes the solution!

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1529) was… ANNEX.
With only 37 letter Xs among Wordle’s 2,309 original answers, you’d only expect one every 62 games. And usually, their appearances have been in that ballpark; there were 40 games between the previous one, EXTOL, and EXILE before that, 30 between the latter and VIXEN, 54 between that word and INBOX, and 105 separating that and RELAX. Some gaps have been shorter, some longer – but none so short as the five between EXTOL and today’s ANNEX.
It’s not exactly a welcome visitor, either, given that the average score of 4.2 implies people are struggling to solve ANNEX. That’s the same figure as that for Monday’s MIRTH, but given the combination of the repeated N and the uncommon final letter I wouldn’t be surprised to see its score rise over the course of the day.
Then again, WordleBot managed a three – and that was despite its opening SLATE leaving 140 answers. I would have gladly taken that, though; my SWOOP left 1,281 of them!
That’s a purely theoretical number in Wordle terms, and obviously I didn’t attempt to find them all – or even any of them. Instead, I just looked at my unplayed letters and went with LATER in order to include five of the most common remaining, and in a likely order.
LATER worked really well, cutting down that list by more than 1,200 in one fell swoop and leaving only seven. It took me a while to see that there were so few, though – with only two letters in place, and both of them vowels, there was very little structure to the board.
I decided to focus on letters that could go after the green E. R and L, two of the most likely candidates, were already ruled out – and I didn’t think it would end with a D, either.
Instead, I came up with ADIEU and ANNEX, but no others. The ‘Bot also had ABBEY, which I should have found, plus four D words: ADDED, AIDED, ACHED and AIMED; I doubt any will be real solutions though.
I couldn’t recall ADIEU having been a past Wordle answer (it hasn’t), so went with that and turned the A green. I also ruled out those unlikely D-ending answers, leaving me with only ANNEX and ABBEY. I still hadn’t thought of the latter, though, so played ANNEX and scored a slightly lucky four.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm in 2022 and is still going strong in 2025.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren’t in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.
