To celebrate the first anniversary of the PlayStation VR2, Sony revealed a new batch of games coming to its virtual reality headset and confirmed that it’s testing a feature that would let people play PC VR games on their PSVR2.
“We’re pleased to share that we are currently testing the ability for PS VR2 players to access additional games on PC to offer even more game variety in addition to the PSVR2 titles available through PS5,” the PlayStation Blog post about PSVR2’s first anniversary teases. “We hope to make this support available in 2024, so stay tuned for more updates.”
That statement seems somewhat intentionally vague, so we don’t know yet if this PC compatibility will come via cloud streaming or a direct wired connection. Hopefully, it works somewhat like Meta Quest Link and will make it possible to play games like Half-Life Alyx and Boneworks on PSVR2. Heading into the second year of its life, PSVR2 sorely needs features like that. In a recent article reflecting on the headset’s first year on the market, I wrote that I was “disappointed now that I understand just how niche the use case for the PSVR2 is within my own VR usage.”
Part of the underwhelming nature of PSVR2 is the lack of exclusives. Although this blog post didn’t do much to fix that problem, it did highlight some new games coming to PSVR2 in the coming months. Today, an Arizona Sunshine 2 update and the spellcasting the first-person shooter Wanderer: The Fragments of Fate will be released on June 27.
Later this year, games like Soul Covenant and Zombie Army VR will come to the PSVR2. None of those feel like headset sellers, but this blog post and the potential for PC compatibility announcement at least give some hope for PSVR2’s second year.
