It’s been A Year.

I don’t really need to recap why, do I? To exist in 2020 is to comprehend why.

But we were all reminded of how much of A Year it has been this week when Spotify released to users their annual Wrapped playlists and data. Music, after all, can tell you a lot about how you’re feeling.

People online, as per usual, were quick to share their playlists and, yep, it’s confirmed: This year was sad and we didn’t feel great.

That seemed to be the theme of the year, well, that and Taylor Swift, of course.

And listen, I get it. 2020 was depressing and some of us (apparently lots of us) like to embrace sadness by listening to sad music. I include myself in that camp. My top artist was the rock group the The Hold Steady (my favorite band), but I also listened to a veritable shit ton of Phoebe Bridgers, Soccer Mommy, Jason Isbell, and Bill Callahan. Here’s my contribution to the compulsory sharing of Wrapped playlists.

Here’s to our 2021 Wrapped playlists being full of party music. But I wouldn’t count on it.
