Squid Game season 3 is less than 24 hours away (at the time of publication) from making its grand entrance. The incredibly popular Netflix TV Original’s final season will launch worldwide on June 27, so now’s the best time to catch up on what we know about it so far.
In this guide, I’ve rounded up the biggest and latest information on Squid Game‘s third season. That includes its confirmed cast, story details, trailers, and the franchise’s future. What, you didn’t think one of the best Netflix shows of all-time would be allowed to end after Seong Gi-hun’s story ends, did you?

As I mentioned, Squid Game season 3 will make its Netflix debut on Friday, June 27.
It’ll be the main show’s shortest season, too, as it only comprises six episodes. For more details on when they’ll air on the world’s best streaming service, check out my Squid Game season 3 release schedule article.
Squid Game season 3 trailer
Squid Game season 3’s official trailer was released publicly in late May. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t tell us too much about how the series will end, but there are enough tantalizing clips within that suggest it’ll go out with a bang.

It’s highly unlikely any new characters will be introduced in Squid Game‘s third and final season. The series has got plenty of individual and collective stories to wrap up already, so there shouldn’t be room to include newcomers.
Of course, it’s possible flashback sequences could be part of proceedings, which would allow deceased characters to temporarily return from the dead. Right now, though, it’s impossible to say if any of them will.
Squid Game season 3 story synopsis and speculation

Here’s the official story synopsis for Squid Game season 3: “Picking up from season 2’s devastating cliffhanger, season 3 thrusts Gi-hun (Player 456) back into the brutal heart of the games, determined to dismantle them once and for all.
“Still haunted by the betrayal and loss of his closest ally Jung-bae (Player 390), Gi-hun faces new perils – including the Front Man, who shockingly infiltrated their rebellion disguised as Player 001.”
Unsurprisingly, this season will pick up in the immediate aftermath of its forebear. With Front Man successfully quashing Gi-hun’s rebellion from within, it seems all hope is lost for those who want the latest games to end. But, as creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told Netflix Tudum, hope somehow springs eternal for its protagonist.
“The new season will focus on what Gi-hun can and will do after all his efforts fail,” Hwang teased. “He’s in utter despair after losing everything and watching all his efforts go in vain. The story then takes an interesting turn, questioning whether Gi-hun can overcome his shame and rise again to prove that values of humanity – like conscience and kindness – can exist in the arena.”
Away from that, Squid Game 3 has other loose ends to tie up before its story ends. We need to find out if the pregnant Jun-hee will not only make it out alive, but do so with her unborn baby (or, if she gives birth during the games, her newborn). Will she do so with former flame Myung-gi, who’s been trying to make peace with her since season 2 began, too?
Other characters may or may not get a happy ending as well. Will Dae-ho overcome his cowardice and step up the save the day in a potential blaze of glory? Will mother-son duo Yong-sik and Geum-ja escape? Can Hyun-ju be accepted by the outside world if they survive? Is No-eul going to be the group’s ace in the pack? And will Jun-ho ever make it back to the island where the games are held and shut them down for good?!

If any of the above are to live to fight another day, they’ll need to make it through the next batch of deadly games.
If you watched season 2’s final end credits sequence, you’ll have seen the teaser featuring the giant robot from Red Light, Green Light – Young-hee – and her robot boyfriend, aka Chul-su, who’ll surely star as a new life-taking robot in an entirely new game.
As for what those new games could be, Hwang told Entertainment Weekly: “I wanted to introduce games that could really show the lowest bottom of human beings, because the series itself is reaching its climax. I wanted very intense games to bring out the bottom parts of human nature.
“In season 1, we had lots of games like ‘Tug of War’ that really utilized height and the fear that this height gives, but in the case of season 2, we didn’t have that element,” he added. “That’s why in season 3, I decided to introduce games that could really infuse fear in people with sheer height”. Acrophobes, beware!
Will there be a fourth season of Squid Game?
No. Squid Game season 3 is set to be the mainline show’s final entry.
That doesn’t mean the franchise is done, though. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Hwang said of potential spin-off ideas: “One of the ideas I’m tossing around is what happened between season one and two. There’s a three-year gap.
“So, for example, what was the Front Man doing during those three years? What was the Recruiter doing? When I have some downtime, I like to just toss some ideas around and go wild with my imagination. So I guess we can be open to anything.”
In 2022, Deadline also reported that Hwang was also developing a satirical series based on Squid Game‘s creation. At time, it was rumored to be called The Best Show on the Planet, but there’s been little else on the development front since then. Maybe we’ll learn more once season 3 is out.
If you’re craving more from Squid Game, the franchise has already expanded with Squid Game: The Challenge, a real-world (but less deadly!) adaptation of the show whose first season debuted in November 2023. A sophomore season was greenlit not long after but a release date is yet to be announced. In short: the future looks bright for Squid Game, regardless of the main series’ upcoming ending.
