This “Be The Change” Humble Bundle will help you to start decolonizing your reading habits and will also fund initiatives that support social justice and intellectual freedom.
If you’re not familiar with Humble Bundle, it’s a company that connects indie creators with audiences. This Humble Bundle features e-books and audiobooks created by writers and artists of color, as well as books that feature characters of color, too. It’s a selection of nearly 50 books that will diversify every reader’s library and offer much-needed representation for people of color.
The “Be The Change” bundle is a partnership between the American Library Association and Humble Bundle that will aid Spectrum Scholarship Program and the Freedom to Read Foundation, among others.
Here are some of the notable books included in the bundle tiers, which range from $1 to $20 and are available through Feb. 8:
Kindred: A Graphic Novel by Octavia Butler, adapted by Damian Duffy and John Jennings — included in the $8 bundle tier
Based on Octavia Butler’s bestselling science-fiction novel, Kindred, this graphic novel was adapted by Damian Duffy and John Jennings with riveting illustrations. It reckons with the deep impact of slavery on the United States through the story of Jana, a 17-year-old girl who is transported from California in 1970 to the antebellum south before the civil war. This book explores the intersections of feminism, racism, and history and served as part of the rise of the Afrofuturism genre.
Falling in Love With Hominids by Nalo Hopkinson — Included in the $8 bundle tier
This collection of Nalo Hopkinson’s work includes a multitude of short stories not previously available in print, as well as one new fiction piece, exclusive to this book. Hopkinson has been revered by The New York Times, and often writes stories that meld contemporary societies and problems with Afro-Caribbean folklore.
Black Fatigue by Mary-Frances Winters — Included in the $15 bundle tier
Racism doesn’t just affect society as a whole, it affects people of color on a personal level too. In this book, diversity and inclusion expert Mary-Frances Winters discusses intergenerational trauma, and the physical and mental tolls that racism takes on Black people. It is a must-read for anyone committing to anti-racism work in their daily lives.
