Today’s Wordle answer (game #897)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #897) is… ADAPT.
Repeated letters usually make Wordles harder to solve, but it isn’t always the case – and today’s game is a good example of that. In fact, WordleBot says ADAPT has an average score of 3.6, making it the second easiest in the past week.
Admittedly, some of that is down to the success of one particular starting word, but it’s not the only factor that makes ADAPT a relatively straightforward solve. You can also look to the fact that the repeated letter, A, is a relatively likely one to appear more than once – though not as common in this regard as E, which featured in yesterday’s GENRE (see below. Plus, D, P and T are all regular visitors to the Wordle board; there are no tricksy Qs or Zs, or even the likes of a K or V to worry about here.
The biggest reason why it has such a low average, though, is that one of the most popular starting words gave players a massive head start. I say “one of” the most popular starters, but ADIEU is actually the most commonly used by far; today, 9% of Wordlers began with it. It’s not one of the best Wordle starting words, mathematically, but when it works, it really brings the overall average down. And that’s what happened today: it left a mere four possible answers, meaning that 9% of people will have scored a 2/6 or 3/6.
STARE, my pick, left 15 possibles, so I needed some luck with my second word. But first I had to identify those remaining answers. Of course, I didn’t know there were 15 of them at this stage – WordleBot only reveals that after the game is over. But I had come up with a decent number of them myself, finding CHANT, THANK, PLANT, GIANT, ADAPT, LOATH, TWANG, PLAIT and TWAIN. And of the six I missed, four were quite obscure: COATI, CHAAT, QUANT, TOADY. The only two I’m a bit annoyed at myself for not finding were AWAIT and INAPT.
Anyway, based on those answers I decided to go with PLING; P, L and I were in three of my nine, N was in six, G was in two. This wasn’t the best choice, according to WordleBot, but I think its response was skewed by those other answers, some of which were very unlikely.
Anyway, WordleBot isn’t always right, and so it proved today: PLING gave me a yellow P, which reduced my answer pool to a single option. I played ADAPT next for a 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #896)
In a different time zone where it’s still Saturday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #896, too.

G is the eighth most common starting letter, featuring in 115 Wordle answers. It’s often paired with an L to make GL— – but I’m not revealing whether that’s the case today.
- There were repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #896)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #896) was… GENRE.
It’s the weekend, it’s Wordle and it’s… a nice puzzle that may fox a few of you. WordleBot, the NYT’s often-disparaging helper tool (seriously, could they not have made it a bit more positive?) says it has an average score of 4.0 among those who have played it so far, placing it right in the middle of the difficulty range.
The only real complication with it is the repeated E, but that’s not a major problem, given that E is repeated so often it’s hardly an unusual occurrence. In fact, there are 172 games in which E appears twice – meaning it’s more than getting a single V, Z, X, Q or J. And really, that’s underselling it – it’s at least four times more common than any of those letters except for V. Simply put, if an E appears early on in an answer you should always consider the possibility that there’ll be another one lurking somewhere.
That aside, there’s nothing to be unduly worried about here, so I expect some good scores from those of you who play this game properly. And by that, I mean opening with one of the best Wordle starting words, for starters. STARE, my choice, left just seven options today. CRANE, WordleBot’s second favorite, left only six. SNARE left only a single solution!
With so few words to pick from, you might think I’d have been able to find them all, but actually a few of them are quite obscure: GENRE, WHERE and CHORE are all obvious enough, but, LUCRE , OCHRE, INURE and OMBRE a lot less so. Guess which three I found?
Not that it mattered. I played CHORE, because of the three I’d found it would do the best job of narrowing down the options. In my head, it did that – leaving me with only GENRE to play. In reality, it left me with two: GENRE and INURE. So this was one of those games were I unknowingly had a 50/50 and picked correctly. In a parallel universe, I’d be cursing my luck today. In this one, I happily walked away with a 3/6. Sorry, parallel-universe-Marc!

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
