Today’s Wordle answer (game #901)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #901) is… SLEEP.
Repeated letters usually equal more difficult Wordles, but that’s far from the case today. SLEEP has an average score of only 3.2 according to WordleBot, making it the equal fourth easiest so far in 2023; only PLATE (2.9), CLOSE (3.1) and TRADE (also 3.1) have had a lower score.
SLEEP really is an anomaly, because Wordles with repeated letters in never usually have such a low average. I don’t have records for all 902 Wordle answers so far, but I have the figures for nearly 500 of them, including every puzzle so far this year. And among those, no other repeated-letter game even dips below 3.5; LATTE (#696) achieved that score, while TORSO (#532), KNOCK (#539), TRUTH (#842) TRUST (#880) and ADAPT (#897) were all at 3.6.
SLEEP is out on its own, then – but why? Well, the SL combination at the start is probably the main factor, given that it also begins a couple of the best Wordle starting words. SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite and the fourth most popular opening guess today, left only two answers, while SLANT left 14. STALE – which includes the L elsewhere – left five, while PLATE, which swaps the S for a P, also reduced the answer pool to only two options.
STARE, my choice, does start with an S, but doesn’t include an L – so I had a rather less promising 29 remaining words to choose from. Or at least that’s what WordleBot told me after the game. I didn’t find that many, but I did come up with SPEED, SPEND, SPECK, SHELF, SHELL, SHEEN, SLEEP, SLEEK, SHEEP, SPELL, SWELL, SMELL, SWEEP and SWELL, all of which had the same S-E– (or S-EE-) pattern
I did also find a few others, including SINEW and SEVEN, but the S-E– or S-EE- formats were by far the most common, so I focused on them.
The smart thing to do for my second guess was to work out which consonant followed the S, because there are only a limited number that can do so: W, P, L, H, M, N, K and C (also T, but that was ruled out for me).
Playing WHELP enabled me to rule in/out four of those, and would hopefully point the way to answer. And it worked. The P at the end turned green, the L turned yellow and my 29 options were reduced to just one, SLEEP. That gave me my 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #900)
In a different time zone where it’s still Wednesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #900, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

W is a fairly average letter when it comes to starting an answer. There are 82 solutions that begin with a W, with means that it ranks 13th – so right in the middle of the alphabet.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

N is a pretty common ending letter in Wordle: it’s the seventh most likely in that position and features in 130 solutions.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #900)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #900) was… WOMAN.
Happy 900th birthday, Wordle! Yes, today marks another milestone for the world’s favorite five-letter word game – except it doesn’t really, because the first game was #0, so this is actually #901. I guess I should have marked the occasion yesterday then, but that would have been silly.
Anyway, it’s not a particularly notable Wordle for any reason other than that. WordleBot says it has an average score of 3.8 – so the same as yesterday’s puzzle (see below) and slightly below the norm. It’s potentially challenging, in that it contains (and starts with, no less) a W, which is only the 21st most common letter in the game, and also an M – not quite so low down the list, but still only 16th. But the other three letters are common, as is the word itself.
I suspect there’ll be a wide span of scores today, with plenty of 3s and 4s but maybe also some 5s in there. I could only manage a 4/6 myself, which I’m happy enough with in the circumstances.
It’s definitely not a game in which any of the best Wordle starting words made any real difference. Only one of the top 20, as reported by WordleBot, reduced the tally of remaining answers to fewer than 50. That was CRONE, and it still left a hefty 47 options. In contrast, my pick – STARE – left a massive pool of 185 solutions.
I therefore required a good second guess, and I knew where to turn for that: MADLY, which is what I generally play after getting a single yellow A on the opener. I used to alternate that with BADLY, but have now decided that MADLY performs better in this scenario. It definitely did today, giving me a yellow M to go with that still-yellow A and reducing the answers list to nine.
Did I have them all? Unfortunately not, but I did come up with five: HUMAN, AMONG, WOMAN, COMMA and AMINO. The others were apparently UNJAM, AXIOM, AMIGO and AMUCK.
Based on the words in my list, I decide to play AMONG next – it was guaranteed to give me the actual answer on the fourth guess even if it wasn’t itself correct. With a bit of luck I’d have scored a 3/6, but I didn’t get that today; with four letters turning yellow I was now sure what the answer was, but had to play WOMAN next turn for a 4/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
