Wordle hints (game #916) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in two places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #916) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is T.

T is one of the most common starting letters in the game, beginning 149 of Wordle‘s 2,309 answers. That gives it a ranking of fourth in the alphabet, behind only S, C and B.

Wordle hints (game #916) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #916) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is H.

H is a regular visitor to the final spot in a Wordle word. It occurs 137 times at the end of a Wordle answer, making it the sixth most common letter there.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #916)

Today’s Wordle answer (game #916) is… TOUCH.

I spent a fair bit of time yesterday bemoaning the fact that Wordle is now too easy – only to then score a 5/6 the very next day. I think that could be described as irony. Or maybe justice.

TOUCH is actually easier than yesterday’s BUILT, according to WordleBot; it apparently has an average score of 3.5, compared to 4.0 for the previous day’s answer. But that wasn’t my experience at all.

Then again, I didn’t begin with TRACE – the third best Wordle starting word according to WordleBot, and one which today reduced the options to only two. TRICE went one better and left only a single answer.

STARE was a lot less useful for me, leaving 119 answers. This was the same scenario as yesterday’s, so I again played POINT. But where yesterday it had cut the number of possibles to four, here it still left 15; WordleBot said it was an “excellent” choice, but unlucky, and I’m not going to disagree.

My third guess was pretty good – I could see that quite a few of the remaining answers contained an H and a U, for instance TOUCH, TOUGH, YOUTH and MOUTH. I had also scribbled down the likes of BOTCH, BOOTH and MOTTO, so THUMB covered a lot of bases.

It was so close to doing the job I’d wanted it to, but not close enough: the combination of green T, green U and yellow H meant I now had only two answers left: TOUCH and TOUGH. But there was no way for me to choose between them, because I couldn’t recall either having been a past Wordle answer. I could of course have consulted a list – such as the one I maintain myself for other players on this very site! – but I generally choose not to do that. If I had looked, I’d have found that TOUGH was an answer, back in March (game #640). And if I’d have known that, I’d have played TOUCH next and scored a 4/6. Instead I had to settle for my second 5/6 in a week. Easy, eh? Well now I look stupid!

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #915)

In a different time zone where it’s still Thursday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #915, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was B.

B is a very, very common starting letter in Wordle. In fact, it’s the third most common overall, behind only S and C.

  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was T.

T is a very common letter to end a Wordle answer – in fact only E and Y are more likely in that position.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #915)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #915) was… BUILT.

I’ll be honest, I’m getting a little bored by Wordle right now. I know, that’s heresy, right? But I’m craving a difficult one. Something to actually challenge me, to make me use my brain. BUILT has an average score of 3.9, according to WordleBot, making it the 20th puzzle in the past 22 that has been below the overall average for the game, and which therefore could be classed as ‘easy’.

Obviously it’s not a really easy one – 3.9 is only just below the standard 4.0 mark, and it took me four guesses to solve. But there was no real peril here, and nor has there been for a long time (with the possible exception of BACON, for me at least).

Admittedly, a lot of this is my own fault. I choose to start with one of the best Wordle starting words every day, which immediately makes the task a lot easier. And I choose to play in standard mode, rather than on the hard setting. I could change one or both of those factors and make the solving job a lot more difficult. Why don’t I? Well, for one I’m very proud of my Wordle streak, which now stands at 717. And secondly, I just know that if I stop starting with STARE, fate will decree that it will appear as the Wordle answer the very next day and deny my the 1/6 that I think I have earned.

These are both silly reasons of course, so I’m making an early New Year’s resolution: I’m going to start with a random word each day from January 1, 2024. Hard mode may come later.

Anyway, that leaves 11 more games in which I’ll hope STARE is the answer, because it didn’t happen today. Instead, it gave me only a yellow T and left 119 possible solutions. Far more successful results were had by players of SLATE (16), LEAST (13), SLANT (12) and STALE (9).

My second guess had a lot of work to do, then, and today POINT couldn’t quite get the job done. By confirming the T at the end of the word and adding a green I, it reduced the options to four – but that was too many for me to claim a 3/6.

I could have tried, of course, but instead took the safe option and played a word that would guarantee me a 4/6. My reasoning was that the three words I’d found – BUILT, GUILT and QUILT (I missed TWIXT) – only differed by one letter each. So, if I guessed GUILT, for instance, I might still have a 50/50 for my fourth guess and could end up with a 5/6.

I didn’t want that to happen, so played safe and went with BUGLE. If the B turned green, it would be BUILT, if the G it would be GUILT and if neither, then QUILT. In reality, TWIXT was an option too, but I’d have realized my mistake if the U and L in BUGLE didn’t turn green and would presumably have spotted it then. I really was guaranteed a 4/6 here.

My plan worked: the B, U and L all turned green, meaning I now had all five letters for BUILT and played that next for my no-peril four.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
