Today’s Wordle answer (game #965)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #965) is… STIFF.
If I didn’t have WordleBot I’m really not sure I could predict how difficult people would find any given Wordle puzzle. On Tuesday, for instance, the answer was WHICH and the average score for that was 3.9. Today, the answer is STIFF and the average score is… 4.3.
That doesn’t make much sense to me. Both have repeated letters, F for STIFF and H for WHICH. Both have an I as the only vowel. But WHICH also has a W (uncommon) and a C, whereas STIFF has S and T – two of the most common letters overall, and the single most likely starting combination in the game. I’d have expected today’s answer to have been the easier by far.
There are multiple factors at play, of course, and a lot will depend on the performance of the best Wordle starting words. But it can’t be just down to that, because my opener was something of a shocker here, and I still got home in 3/6.
My hunch is that STIFF suffers by sharing its first three letters with too many other words. For instance, on guess #2, according to WordleBot, 4.4% of people guessed STICK, 3.3% went for STING and 2.5% played STINK. On guess #3, STILL was played by 10.1% of Wordlers and on guess #4, STILL, STICK, STING, STILT, STINK, STINT and STICH together accounted for 36% of all attempts.
Fortunately, I didn’t have to choose between those many STI– words, because I followed my opening ACORN (zero letters, 459 possible answers left) with STALE (three greens, one possible answer left).
Yes, I jumped from 459 to one in a single guess. The key was that I’d now ruled out the consonants N, L and C, which between them featured in all of those alternative words I listed above. STIFF was the only word left, so I played it next for a simple 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #964)
In a different time zone where it’s still Thursday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #964, too.

P is a very common first letter among Wordle answers. It’s the fifth most common in the alphabet and begins 141 solutions in total.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #964)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #964) was… PLACE.
There will be many happy Wordlers today – and some of them will be very, very, very happy. That’s because lots of the best Wordle starting words cut down the options considerably. I suspect there will be a lot of 2/6s today, and there may even be some hole-in-ones, because PLACE is itself the opener of choice for some people.
How easy was it? Well, it will have depended to an extent on what you began with. TRACE, WordleBot’s favorite opener, left only four options, while CRATE and CRANE were at six. Words that started PL obviously fared better still, with PLATE and PLANE each leaving only two.
It shouldn’t have been too tricky even for those of you who had more answers to navigate; all five letters are common, although P is only a regularly visitor to a word when it’s used as the first letter, given that it’s 15th overall and 5th at the start. But that wasn’t a problem here, because it was at the beginning of the word.
It’s therefore no great shock that PLACE has an average score of only 3.3, making it the easiest Wordle we’ve had since STOLE three weeks ago. It’s been a tough old game lately, but maybe that’s about to change.
Not that I eased to a 3/6 today, let alone a 2/6. My random opening word was LEGAL, which contained three of the letters I needed but which still left 55 answers. I took the easy option and played SLATE next, in order to locate those three yellows, and succeeded on that front. But I didn’t uncover any others, and still had 11 solutions to choose from.
Finding them was fairly easy, and I soon had all 11 jotted down on a notepad. But there were realistically too many for me to guess it outright, so instead I tried to find a word that would narrow them down and leave me with only one answer.
I didn’t quite manage that – FRUMP left me with a choice of PLACE or PLANE – but I got lucky with the 50/50 and ended up with an acceptable 4/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
