Today’s Wordle answer should be an easy one for many people – but as I know from personal experience, ‘should be easy’ doesn’t always apply in this game. In fact, despite today’s puzzle having an average score of 3.7, I only solved it in 5 guesses!
But don’t worry, because you’re not on your own. I’ve played every game since December 2021 and can give you some helpful clues to ensure your streak stays intact.

T is one of the most common starting letters in the game, beginning 149 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. That gives it a ranking of fourth in the alphabet, behind only S, C and B.

• There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

H is a regular visitor to the final spot in a Wordle word. It occurs 137 times at the end of a Wordle answer, making it the sixth most common letter there.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #640)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #640) is… TOUGH.
Well, in one sense it’s TOUGH. As in, the answer is literally TOUGH. But in another… well, not so much for most people. In fact, WordleBot says people are solving it in an average of 3.7 guesses, making it one of the easiest answers we’ve had recently.
A look at the letters tells part of the story for why that might be; T is a very common starting letter, H is a very common ending letter, and O and U are generally common. G is less so, other than when it’s used at the start of an answer, but it’s hardly an X or Z.
That said, I’m slightly surprised that the average score is quite that low. There are lots of answers that have similar letters to TOUGH, so you would expect the average to be higher as a result. What’s more, most of the best Wordle starting words won’t have helped much today. For instance, SLATE left 102 possible solutions, while the likes of CRANE (357), SLANT (180), CRATE (107) and STARE (119) were all worse. Of the top choices, only TRACE (23) was all that helpful.
Clearly some people had a lot more luck than me, because despite an overall skill score of 97 I only managed to scrape home with a 5/6 today.
My go-to follow up after a single yellow T is always POINT, but today it didn’t work all that well. Though it gave me a green O, the T stayed yellow and I could see I still had lots of possible options remaining.
WordleBot told me afterwards that there were 15 of them, and I found 12 of them myself: LOFTY, LOTTO, DOTTY, TOUGH, TOUCH, BOTCH, BOOTH, YOUTH, MOTTO, TOOTH, MOUTH and BOOTY. The ones I seemingly missed were COUTH, TODDY and HOTLY.
I figured I’d need to narrow it down further, so played THUMB; this was designed to see if it was one of the OU words or not, and whether there was a TH at the end. M and B, meanwhile, each featured in two or three other possible solutions.
WordleBot liked it well enough, and rightly so: with the T and U turning green, and the H going yellow, I now had just two to choose from: TOUCH and TOUGH.
Unfortunately, there was no way for me to know which it was. And today, the luck was against me. I played TOUCH first, missed out, and had to settle for a disappointing 5/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #639)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #639) was… GLOVE.
We’re firmly in standard Wordle territory here, with an answer that looks easy enough in most regards, but deceptively so. I don’t see many people losing their streaks today, but I doubt we’ll have too many really high scores either.
There’s one main reason for that: the V in position #4. V is the fifth least common letter in the game, ahead of only Q, Z, X and J, and is therefore unlikely to be a letter most people play until they are already a fair way into their guesses.
But the V aside, not many of the best Wordle starting words will have helped much today, and that always brings the overall average down. As it happens, SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite starter, performed best, narrowing down the options to just 16. But none of the others were much help, with the likes of CRANE (126), SLANT (64), TRACE (127) and STARE (106) all leaving things wide open.
I didn’t know that I had as many as 106 options, but I knew there were lots of them. I therefore decided right away to forget about scoring a 2/6 and to instead include an extra letter rather than playing the already-green E that STARE had given me.
My choice was CLOUD, and WordleBot liked it, awarding me 91 for skill while telling me that LINGO would have been better. Fair enough, but it did reduce my options from 106 to just 4, so I’m not complaining! What’s more, even if I had played LINGO I’d still have scored a 4/6, because the two choices it left – GLOBE and GLOVE – were the two I considered anyway. Why? Well, the other two – ELOPE and BLOKE – were both past Wordle answers, and for once I remembered them.
GLOBE vs GLOVE was a straight 50/50. I had no reason to choose one over the other, because both seemed like realistic Wordle answers. Ultimately, it was a coin toss – and today I called it wrong. Still, I was never in any real danger and a third 4/6 in a row isn’t a disaster.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
