Today’s Wordle answer is yet another easy one – the fourth we’ve had in a row. WordleBot, the NYT’s AI helper tool, says people are solving it in 3.5 guesses on average, so there should be some high scores up for grabs.

You might still want some Wordle hints, though, because in this game, failure is only ever six guesses away. And I should know, because I’ve played every day since December 2021.

So, read on for my hints and the answers to game #654 and bookmark this page so you can easily return tomorrow. Oh, and if you also play Quordle then my Quordle today page contains hints and answers for that, too.

SPOILER WARNING: Information about today’s Wordle answers are below, so don’t read on if you don’t want to see them.

Wordle hints (game #654) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has three vowels*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #654) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is R.

R is a surprisingly uncommon starting letter. Despite ranking third overall in Wordle, it’s merely the 11th most likely to begin an answer.

Wordle hints (game #654) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #654) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is O.

O is a middling ending letter. It ranks 12th in this regard, and finishes 58 Wordle answers in total.

Wordle hints (game #654) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #654)

Today’s Wordle answer (game #654) is… RATIO.

Wow. That’s four games in a row with an average score below 4, and this one if (potentially) the easiest of the lot. People are solving this one in 3.5 guesses, according to WordleBot, which is actually among the lowest scores we’ve had in the entire history of Wordle.

Why is it seemingly so easy? Well, all five letters are super common. Those of you who use a vowel-heavy starting word such as AUDIO will have been particularly well served today, given that RATIO includes an A, I and O. In fact, some of the best Wordle starting words were very helpful today; my choice, STARE, left me with just 17 possible solutions, the same as TRACE and one fewer than CRATE. CARTE left just four!

I didn’t find all 17 of those possible solutions, but I came up with a handful, including TRIAL, ACTOR, TARDY, TRIAD, PARTY, AORTA, RATTY and the eventual answer. And for once, I decided to make an outright guess on the next turn, rather than further narrowing things down; we all have to take a risk sometimes, eh?

As it happened, it wasn’t too much of a risk anyway. PARTY wasn’t right, but it gave me a green A and narrowed down my options to just two words, RATIO and GATOR. However, I hadn’t spotted that GATOR was a possibility – so I played RATIO anyway and scored a fortunate 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #653)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #653) was… FLORA.

This is the third pretty straightforward Wordle we’ve had in a row, so I guess I needn’t have worried about Wordle’s new era being marked by an increased difficulty after all. WordleBot says it’s being solved in an average of 3.7 guesses and really there’s no reason why you should have struggled today.

Well, OK, there is one reason – and that’s if your choice of the best Wordle starting words was unlucky. Anyone starting with SLATE (WordleBot’s favorite opener) or STARE (mine) fared well today, as they narrowed down the possible answers to only 16 or 19 respectively. But those of you who played CRANE still had 80 to whittle down, so you may well have found it tough to score higher than a 4/6. Either way, I don’t expect too many failures today.

The letters themselves are certainly all common enough. F is not that high up the frequency list overall (it ranks 19th), but it is much more likely to be found at the start of an answer than elsewhere (it’s the seventh most common starting letter). L, O, R and A are all common letters throughout the game; there are no curveballs here.

Certainly it was simple enough for me. I got a green R and yellow A on the first guess, and though 19 possible answers is too many for a realistic chance of a 2/6, I knew that if I guessed wisely a 3/6 was on the cards.

But what to play? The possible answers I’d come up with generally fell into two categories: words that ended RY (FAIRY, DAIRY, CARRY, ANGRY) and words that didn’t (ADORN, ACORN, FLORA). Playing an R in the middle of the word was therefore helpful – as it would rule in/out all of the -ARRY words – while putting the A second would indicate that it wasn’t one of the -AIRY options. FARED fit that bill nicely, while also including an F and D which helped rule in/out other options.

WordleBot wasn’t overly impressed, awarding me just 58 for skill – but that’s a little unfair. What WordleBot didn’t know is that I’d already ruled out some solutions because they’d been past Wordle answers. For instance, I remembered MARRY, I knew that HARRY had been rejected as an answer last year, and I recalled HAIRY, too. So, my list was different from WordleBot’s, and FARED was designed to filter only my list, not all 19 possibles.

Anyway, I had the last laugh, because that gave me a green F to go with the yellow A and R and left me with just the one possible solution. I played FLORA on the next go and scored a third straight 3/6.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
