Right, prepare yourself – because today’s Wordle is another tough one. It has an average score of 4.2 according to the NYT’s AI helper tool, WordleBot, and is a word that lots of people are complaining about on Twitter.

With that in mind, you definitely might want some Wordle hints – because failure in this game is only ever six guesses away. I’ve played every day since December 2021, and can provide you with tips for how to beat the game, as well as giving you specific clues for today’s Wordle.

Wordle hints (game #659) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has two vowels*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #659) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is S.

S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. In fact, it’s almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.

Wordle hints (game #659) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #659) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is U.

U is an incredibly uncommon ending letter in Wordle. In fact, we’ve only had one previous answer ending in a U!

Wordle hints (game #659) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #659)

Today’s Wordle answer (game #659) is… SNAFU.

Oh boy! This one looks like being a bit controversial, for several reasons.

Firstly, I wrote a few weeks ago about how Wordle has entered a new era, because game #646 (GUANO) saw the NYT use a ‘new’ answer, rather than one from the original solutions list selected by creator Josh Wardle.

Well, today’s game repeats that trick: SNAFU is not among Wardle’s list of words. This doesn’t in itself make it any more difficult, but it is interesting that the two extra words added by Tracy Bennett, Wordle’s editor, have both been on the obscure side.

SNAFU is a word – although it originally started as a military acronym for Situation Normal, All F***** Up. Essentially, it means a muddled or confused situation. However, due to its origins, many people might see it as a slang term.

Even if you know the word, you might not think of it. Plus, you might well not find it on the game board anyway, because it has a fairly unusual format with a U at the end. Until today, there had only been one Wordle answer ending in a U: BAYOU, which was the solution to game #344 in May 2022. My calculations had it that there were no other U-ending answers in the game left, so SNAFU has royally messed my Wordle spreadsheet. In fact, its appearance here has caused something of a… snafu, you could say.

So, it’s a difficult one. WordleBot says people are solving it in an average of 4.2 guesses, but I suspect lots of people will find it harder than that.

Fortunately, some of the best Wordle starting words did at least help narrow things down today. For instance, WordleBot’s former favorite, CRANE, left just 12 possible solutions. SLANT left only nine. My choice, STARE, left 31, which wasn’t quite so good, but still not terrible.

Playing CLIMB next was a move designed to rule out as many answers as possible; I knew it couldn’t be correct, obviously. But as WordleBot pointed out rather needlessly afterwards, it was quite unlucky today, giving me no extra letters.

Ruling out those five had narrowed down the field from 31 to 11, and by this point I knew what almost all of them were. I had 10: SHAKY, SNAKY, SHADY, SWANK, SPANK, SHANK, SWASH SNAFU, SPAWN, and SOAPY. The other one, WordleBot reckoned, was SWANG – but is that really a word?

Anyway, I figured I needed to play another narrowing-down-word on my third guess and went with PHONY; this was intended to point the way to one or the Y-ending words, or one of the K-ending ones (all of which had an N before the K). The O would indicate SOAPY. I might have faced a 50/50 between SHAKY and SHADY, but otherwise I’d be guaranteed a 4/6.

My lucky changed here, with the N turning yellow but the other letters all going gray. SNAFU was now the only word that fit, and I duly played that next for a 4/6 that I’m sure some people will be looking enviously at today.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #658)

In a different time zone where it’s still Saturday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #658, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had one vowel, repeated.
  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was L.
  • There was one repeated letter in yesterday’s Wordle.
  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was E.
  • Yesterday’s Wordle answer is a narrow shelf.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #658)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #658) was… LEDGE.

This is arguably the toughest Wordle we’ve had for more than a week. At least that’s what its average score from WordleBot would suggest: it’s taking people 4.3 guesses to solve it, which places it well above yesterday’s puzzle (see below), and that was no walk in the park.

The repeated E is the obvious complication: though E is the most likely letter to be repeated in Wordle, it’s still a lot less likely than an E appearing on its own, so you won’t necessarily have thought to play it early.

Plus, many of the best Wordle starting words weren’t too helpful today. SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, left just 26 possible solutions, but the likes of STARE (106), CRANE (126), SLANT (197) and TRACE (127) were all above 100.

That made the second guess very important for most people – and I got lucky with mine. I played CLOUD, which couldn’t have been the answer due to it not including an E at the end, but somehow it reduced my possible answers from 106 to just two!

With the yellow D and L and the green E, and with the O and U now ruled out, I could see that my only options were either DELVE or LEDGE. I had a straight 50/50 but couldn’t really lose, as a 4/6 wouldn’t be a disaster. As it happens I picked correctly and scored a sweet 3/6 to start the weekend.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
