Prepare yourself – because today’s Wordle answer is one of the most difficult we’ve ever had! WordleBot, the NYT’s AI helper tool, says people are solving it in an average of 4.7 guesses, and I can already see people complaining about it on Twitter.
You might well want some Wordle hints for it, then – and that’s where I can help. Why should you trust me? Well, I’ve played every day since December 2021 and currently have a streak of more than 460. That should do it.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #662)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #662) is… BORAX.
Honestly, this is a stupid answer. For a start, it’s just really, really obscure. BORAX? We’ve had some uncommon words before, but this is on another level. It’s also biased against people in certain parts of the world, including the UK (where I am), because BORAX isn’t even available to buy here!
Even putting aside the obscurity of the word, it’s a tricky solve, and yet more evidence that Wordle has now entered a new era of difficulty. Just in the past four days we’ve had QUALM (which has a pesky Q in it) and SNAFU (which is an uncommon word with an uncommon structure) and now BORAX, with its X and its well-you-may-have-heard-of-this-word-but-possibly-not-who-cares attitude.
Then again, I have no problem with Wordle being hard as such. It’s good to challenge people’s vocabulary, and BORAX is undoubtedly a great word to know for if you’re playing Scrabble. It just feels a little too obscure for my liking.
Anyway, I’m probably just peeved because I only scored a 5/6 – my first one of those in three weeks. I didn’t get much help with my choice of the best Wordle starting words, with STARE only giving me yellow A and R and still leaving 82 possible solutions, according to WordleBot. Still, that was better than SLATE (199) or SLANT (269) and only slightly worse than CRANE (80), TRACE (75) or CRATE (also 75). Best of the top words today was CARTE (16).
CAROL seemed like a good second guess, because it place the A and R in common slots while adding the next most common vowel and a couple of very common consonants. WordleBot loved it – and said it would have chosen the same word. But it was a bit unlucky, leaving four answers still.
So, at this stage, I was two guesses in, with only four answers left. How on earth did it take me another three guesses? Well, for a start, I didn’t know there were four answers left – in fact, I thought there were just two: FORAY and MORAY.
I played FORAY, thinking I’d get either a 3/6 or 4/6, but no. It confirmed the -ORA- pattern in the middle, but with no Y I no longer had a viable next guess. I looked at the board again, and after a while decided it must be KORAN. I didn’t think this would be the answer, but Wordle accepted it… and again, told me it was wrong.
Slightly panicked, I made a list of all possible answers at this stage – of which there were 289. Yes, really! I used a spreadsheet to compile the list, but it still took me a while to look through them all, past QORAI and RORAM and DORAB and a load more words that don’t exist.
Among these 289 words I found just one that I thought might be an actual answer: BORAX. So, I played that – and gave a big sigh of relief when those five letters all turned green. But I still think it’s a stupid word.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #661)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #661)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #661) was… QUALM.
It’s been a while since we’ve had a Q-starting Wordle. In fact, you’d have to go back nearly 200 games, to October 2022, when QUIRK was the answer to Wordle #487. Then again, it shouldn’t be surprising that it’s been so long: there are only 23 Wordle solutions starting with Q in total, making it the sixth least likely starting letter.
Of course, that’s based on the original answer list compiled by the game’s creator, Josh Wardle; as I’ve mentioned before, Wordle has now entered a new era, with solutions occasionally added by the game’s official editor. Does that mean more Q answers could crop up in future? Quite possibly.
QUALM was on the original answer list, however (I checked after I’d played – not before, I’m scrupulously honest), and what a lovely word it is too. As well as having the Q at the beginning, it ends with LM – a combination that only finishes two other solutions (on the original list). Kudos to anyone who can guess what they are. (I stupidly challenged myself to work out what they were without peeking and will admit that I failed; I got one, but not the other).
Anyway, back to today’s Wordle. Despite the fact that not many people include a Q in their opening guess, some of the best Wordle starting words were rather helpful today. SLATE – WordleBot’s favorite – left just 12 possible solutions. SLANT left 20. My own pick, STARE, was slightly less use (43), but it wasn’t a disastrous start.
I didn’t find all 43 options, but I came up with a list of about 20 or so. Many began with something-L: CLAMP, CLACK, BLACK, BLANK, BLAND, PLANK, PLAID, FLAIL, FLANK, GLAND and so on. I decided not to attempt a 2/6 – I know, I’m too cautious – and instead went with CLING, which got the L in the second position while including three consonants that featured in lots of my answers. WordleBot liked it, but suggested CLUNK would have been even better. Tomato, tomato.
The L did change color, but it only went yellow not green – which meant most of my options were immediately ruled out. In fact, I had just three left: KOALA, LOAMY and QUALM. After the game, WordleBot told me it had the same list. The thing is, I remembered KOALA being a past Wordle answer (game #574, back in January), so I really only had two left.
Now, I don’t know if LOAMY is an actual Wordle answer, but it seemed less likely to be one than QUALM, so I went with that despite the Q… and guessed correctly. Judging by the early reports on Twitter, others haven’t been so fortunate.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
