Today’s Wordle answer is another simple one as we all recover from the dual horror of QUALM and BOROX earlier in the week. WordleBot, the NYT’s AI helper tool, says people are completing it in an average of 3.6 guesses – which actually makes it one of the easiest puzzles we’ve had in weeks.

Of course no Wordle should ever be taken lightly, because in this game, failure is only ever six guesses away. So allow me to furnish you with some Wordle hints for game #664 – and you can even see the answer, too, if you don’t have time to play.

Want more word-based fun? My Quordle today page contains hints and answers for that, too.

SPOILER WARNING: Information about today’s Wordle answers are below, so don’t read on if you don’t want to see them.

Wordle hints (game #664) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has two vowels*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #664) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is T.

T is one of the most common starting letters in the game, beginning 149 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. That gives it a ranking of fourth in the alphabet, behind only S, C and B.

Wordle hints (game #664) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #664) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is F.

F is not a particularly common ending letter in Wordle. It only ranks 17th in this regard, and a mere 26 of the original Wordle answers end in this letter.

Wordle hints (game #664) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #664)

Today’s Wordle answer (game #664) is… THIEF.

I said up top that this is a simple one, and it really is. WordleBot says it’s being solved in an average of 3.6 guesses, which makes it the equal second easiest (behind RATIO) since early March.

Strangely, though, that has nothing to do with most of the best Wordle starting words. SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, left 114 possible solutions, and the likes of CRANE (275), SLANT (180), CRATE (102) and my pick, STARE (90) were either worse still or only marginally better. TRACE was the only (minor) success today: that left 29 options.

However… ADIEU, which as always was the most popular start word of all, was very lucky today – it left just 11 possible solutions.

Right, so let’s talk about ADIEU for a bit. Apparently 8% of people started with it today, compared to 5% for the similar AUDIO. STARE, RAISE and SLATE – three genuinely great starting words – only had 4%, 3% and 3% respectively.

The thing is, ADIEU is not (usually) a good starting word. WordleBot rates it as 80/99 for skill, whereas STARE gets 97 and SLATE 99. Other studies say much the same. Yeah, it has four vowels in it, but vowels aren’t the key to solving Wordle quickly, consonants are.

Anyway, nobody will listen to me, and that’s fine – we’re all grown ups, you can make your own mistakes and I won’t judge you (much).

Of course everything I’ve just said is slightly negated by the fact that today at least, ADIEU was a great choice of starting word. Either way, ADIEU’s popularity probably explains in part why today’s puzzle has such a low average. Some of the letters will have helped, too, because T, I and E are all very common; H and F less so. In fact, F is quite uncommon when used at the end of an answer.

With 90 possible solutions, I was never going to score a 2/6 (if I had, you’d have thought I cheated, right?), but I played a word that might have been correct anyway. Usually, with lots of potential solutions, I narrow things down first but with two yellows I just wanted to turn a couple of them green.

I played TONED because lots of my choices had T at the start and E in fourth and my hunch proved correct: TONED put both of those letters in their rightful places. I didn’t get any other hits, but that turned out not to matter, because despite looking for a while I could only find one solution: THIEF.

WordleBot told me afterwards that I actually had two options, and it was right – I could also have played TWEET. But today was one of those days where the luck was with me. I missed TWEET entirely, played THIEF instead and scored a 3/6.

How did you do today? Send me an email and let me know.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #663)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #663) was… CARAT.

One of the things I love about Wordle is the way I pick up little nuggets of information through playing it. Sometimes – as with yesterday’s puzzle (see below) – I find out the meaning of a word I only dimly knew. On others, I learn something about a word I am well aware of.

Today is a good example of the latter. I know the word CARAT, though it’s not one I use that often. However, I did not know that in the US and some other countries, CARAT is only used to refer to the weight of diamonds and other gemstones. When you’re talking about the purity of gold, you instead use KARAT. Here in the UK we use CARAT for both meanings, so I didn’t even consider KARAT as an answer today – something that may well have helped me solve the puzzle in 3/6 rather than 4/6.

CARAT is not an easy Wordle answer as such, though its average score of 3.8, according to WordleBot, does imply that it’s on the easier side of the norm.

The letters used are all very common, which will have helped; C is the second most likely letter to start a Wordle answer, after S, while T is the third most likely to end one after E and Y. A is the second most common letter in the entire game, and R is third, so from that point of view it really was set up to be straightforward.

But that said, there is a repeated A here – not something that’s all that common in Wordle (there are 69 examples in total, which means you’d expect one every 30-35 games). And CARAT isn’t all that common of a word (well, unless you’re a jeweler).

Regardless of all that, if you chose one of the best Wordle starting words today then you may well have sailed through this game. In fact, it was one of the best ever examples of why it’s important to use one, if you’re seeking to get high scores each day.

CRATE and CARTE – two of WordleBot’s favorites – both left just one solution today. Unless you somehow screwed up, that’s a guaranteed 2/6. TRACE left only two, CRANE 10 and my favorite, STARE, 17. So there are definitely high scores to be had here.

STARE turned up yellow T, A and R for me, and I could see right away that there were a few possible solutions that ended in Y: PARTY, RATTY and TARDY were all on my list. I also had TAROT, TRIAL, TRIAD, AORTA and ACTOR. I didn’t have RATIO – because that was an answer last week (game #654).

Anyway, I decided to go down the Y-ending route and played TARDY. WordleBot gave me 89/99 for it, though it would have played TAROT. Either option would have have worked well; mine turned the A and R green, and narrowed down my possible answers list to just two: KARAT or CARAT. Or rather, that’s what WordleBot thought. In my head, there was just one – because I didn’t consider the K version. So I played CARAT next and scored a 3/6.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
