Today’s Wordle answer may be the easiest one we’ve ever had. That’s going by the NYT’s AI helper tool WordleBot, at least, which says people are solving it in an average of 2.9 guesses!

Wordle hints (game #670) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has two vowels*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #670) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is P.

P is a very common first letter among Wordle answers. It’s the fifth most common in the alphabet and begins 141 solutions in total.

Wordle hints (game #670) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #670) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is E.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Wordle hints (game #670) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #670) is… PLATE.

As a measure of quite how variable Wordle – and indeed, the English language – can be, today’s puzzle is one of the easiest we’ve ever had, following on from one of the hardest ever on Tuesday.

WordleBot says people are solving it in 2.9 guesses – which may just mean that it’s the absolute easiest Wordle yet. I can’t say that for sure, because I don’t have stats for all 671 solutions to date (the first was #0, so there have been 671 not 670) but this is the first game that I know has a rating of below 3.

Why is it so easy? Well, the letters are all incredibly common, and it’s a common word too. P is the fifth most common starting letter, while L, A, T and E are all in the top 10 most common letters overall.

What’s more, many of the best Wordle starting words reduced the possible solutions list down considerably today. That’s inevitable, given quite how many of the top choices include L, A, T and E.

For instance, WordleBot’s favorite, SLATE, left just two possible answers: PLATE or ELATE. SLANT also left just two. So did LEAST. My word, STARE, reduced it down to five, while the likes of TRACE (13) and CRATE (9) were pretty good too. Bad luck if you started with ADIEU today, though: you still had 217 options remaining.

It’s been a long time since I scored a 2/6, but I managed it today (along, no doubt, with many others). Of the five options left to me, I found four: PLATE, ELATE, ABATE and AGATE. I couldn’t recall any having been past Wordle answers, but I’ve checked since playing, and apparently the latter two both appeared in 2021. The word I missed? OVATE, which would never have occurred to me.

Anyway, I would usually narrow things down in this scenario to guarantee a 3/6 but today I was feeling bold. I knew that if I guessed PLATE I’d either get it in 2/6, or if it was ELATE it would be 3/6, or if one of the other two then it would be a 50/50 for 3/6 or 4/6. The latter would have been frustrating, but also relatively unlikely, so I decided to take the plunge and go for a 2/6.

And today it worked: I played PLATE and scored my first 2/6 since WHERE at the start of last month.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #669)

In a different time zone where it’s still Wednesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #669, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had one vowel.
  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was T.
  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was P.
  • Yesterday’s Wordle answer hits hard.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #669)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #669) was… THUMP.

This represents the calm after yesterday’s storm. Where game #668 was a really tough one which many people failed to solve (and yes, I’m sorry if yesterday’s Wordle ended your streak – but really, it’s your own fault), today’s is far more manageable.

WordleBot says people are solving it in an average of 3.8 guesses, and I’d be surprised if many avid Wordlers needed more than four or at most five for it. It took me four, because I made an incredibly stupid mistake that I’m embarrassed to recount. I hang my head in shame at it.

Anyway, THUMP is pretty straightforward. T is the fifth most common letter overall in Wordle, and the fourth most likely to start an answer. The TH combination at the beginning of the word is also pretty common: there are 24 of these among the original 2,309 Wordle answers. That might not sound like a lot, but there are also 36 Wordle answers that end in TH, and a bunch more that occur in the middle of a solution (I haven’t calculated the latter). If you see a T, and your brain works like mine, you immediately think ‘Ah! This probably has an H with it.’ And today it did.

The other letters are more middling: U, M and P rank 11th, 16th and 15th respectively in terms of overall frequency in the game. But the word itself is in regular use and there’s no too-many-answers problem to navigate.

My pick of the best Wordle starting words, STARE, gave me a single yellow T and left me with 119 possible solutions, according to WordleBot. SLATE was in the same ballpark (102), but CRANE (357) and SLANT (180) were both higher, as was ADIEU, the most popular choice (246). The most successful starter today, of the top words, was TRACE: just 23 options left here.

My go-to second word with a single T is always POINT and today it was incredibly lucky: it gave me a yellow P to go with my yellow T and left me with just two possible answers. Yet somehow, I managed to screw it up from here.

What happened was I looked at the board and was overconfident and distracted. I was playing in the daytime, while at work, so I could write this column up. I had a meeting in 10 minutes and just wanted to get it finished. So I rushed it. Yellow T and yellow P… well, it must be TULIP, I thought.

Obviously not – because the I was already ruled out. Instead, the two words left to me, according to WordleBot, were the eventual answer, THUMP, plus CUTUP – and frankly, the latter doesn’t sound like an actual Wordle answer. It’s certainly not one I would have thought of.

If I’d taken a little more time I’d have spotted that TULIP couldn’t be the answer. I’m pretty certain I’d have then found THUMP instead, given that no other word was a realistic choice. If, if, if…

When the T and P turned green on the next guess, and the U turned yellow, I realized my mistake, looked again at the board, and spotted THUMP. I played that next and scored a frustrating 4/6.

The moral of the story? I’m an idiot who should spend less time lecturing others on how to play Wordle and more time on my own game.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
