Today’s Wordle could be a real opinion-splitting puzzle. WordleBot, the NYT’s AI helper tool, says it has an average score of 3.8, but if you get lucky with your first guess – and many people will have – you could easily score a 2/6 today.

Wordle hints (game #690) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has two vowels*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #690) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is E.

We don’t get many Wordle answers that start with an E – though it’s the most common letter in the game, it’s only the 14th most likely to begin a solution.

Wordle hints (game #690) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #690) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is C.

C is a fairly uncommon letter to end a Wordle answer – it’s only the 16th most likely to be found there.

Wordle hints (game #690) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #690)

Today’s Wordle answer (game #690) is… ETHIC.

Some Wordles are just generally easy – or indeed, generally difficult. This is not one of those games. How difficult it is will probably depend to a large extent on what your choice of the best Wordle starting words is.

That’s true every game, to an extent, but today it really matters. My opener, STARE, left just two possible solutions; CARET and TRICE were at three, with STALE at five, CRATE and CARTE at eight and TRACE at nine. But others weren’t so fortunate: anyone who began with SLATE (114), SLANT (180) or ADIEU (61) will have struggled to get better than a 4/6 today, I suspect.

Oddly, I scored a 2/6 despite finding it one of the toughest Wordles for a long time! That’s because I simply couldn’t see any words that fit after my first guess. STARE had left me with a green T and yellow E, which was confusing; the only consonant that precedes a T at the start of a word is S, and that had just been ruled out. That meant my word had to start VOWEL-T-SOMETHING, and I simply couldn’t find any that fit.

I kept turning up options, then spotting a reason why they didn’t work: OTTER? No, I’ve already ruled out the R. UTTER? Same. OTHER? No, once again, IT CAN’T INCLUDE AN R.

Eventually, after at 20 minutes of trying to come up with a second guess, I realized that ETHNO would fit. I was about to play that, then decided that it would be unlikely to be a Wordle answer, as really it’s a prefix to the likes of ETHNOGRAPHIC, so I looked for other ETH words and finally came up with ETHIC. I played that with fingers firmly crossed and was rewarded with my first 2/6 for about three weeks.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #689)

In a different time zone where it’s still Tuesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #689, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in three places.
  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was C.
  • There were repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was A.
  • Yesterday’s Wordle answer is a drink.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #689)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #689) was… COCOA.

One repeated letter not enough for you? No problem, because COCOA has two! That alone makes it a more difficult word than most, and indeed its average score of 4.5, according to WordleBot, places it up their with the toughest this year. It’s not quite as difficult as JOKER or GUPPY, but it’s not far off.

Repeated letters are not that uncommon in Wordle: 748 out of the original 2,309 answers have one. But two… well, there are only 38 games in which that occurs, and COCOA is one of them. The O is repeated pretty often in Wordle, but the C a lot less so; only 29 games have two Cs.

Another game that had two repeats (and two Cs) was CACAO, which was the answer to #364 in June 2022 – I suspect quite a few people thought today’s word had already been an answer as a result of misremembering that one. CACAO also had an average score of 4.5, according to WordleBot, and was similarly difficult.

On the plus side, some of the best Wordle starting words were very helpful today. CRANE left just 15 possible solutions, for instance, while CRATE (18) and CARTE (21) were similarly successful. Bad luck if you went with my choice, STARE, though: that left 188 possible solutions, while SLATE left 199 and SLANT left 269.

The fact that I still managed to solve today’s puzzle in 3/6 owed everything to my second word, then. I usually play MADLY next following a yellow A on the first guess, but WordleBot always tells me CANAL is a better choice. Today, I heeded its advice and it worked wonders, cutting my options down from 188 to just two.

Those two were COMMA and COCOA, but I remembered that COMMA had been a past Wordle answer, so skipped over that one and scored my 3/6.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
