You might think that you don’t need any clues for Wordle today, but remember: failure in this game is only ever six guesses away.
Below, you’ll find a selection of Wordle hints to guide you in the right direction. You don’t have to use them all, but there are five in total should you need them, covering vowels, starting letter, ending letter and more. And if you don’t have time to play at all, you can see the answer, too.

• The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is G.
G is the eighth most common starting letter, featuring in 115 Wordle answers. It’s often paired with an L to make GL— – but I’m not revealing whether that’s the case today.

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?
• There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

• The last letter in today’s Wordle is F.
F is not a particularly common ending letter in Wordle. It only ranks 17th in this regard, and a mere 26 of the 2,000-plus original Wordle answers end in this letter.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #699)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #699) is… GRIEF.
Yesterday, I mentioned that my Wordle streak has reached the 500 mark. Well, this game brought me back down to Earth with a bang! No, I didn’t fail – but I messed it up royally.
It took me five guesses to solve it – and considering WordleBot, the NYT’s AI helper tool, says people are solving it in 4.0 guesses on average, that’s pretty disappointing.
That said, I did have some bad luck today that would otherwise have seen me come home with a 4/6, so maybe I’m being too hard on myself.
In some ways, I’m surprised GRIEF doesn’t have a higher average. The fact that it ends in an F is relatively uncommon (only 26 Wordle answers do this), and though G is a common starting letter, it’s not particularly common overall, so you might not have thought to play it.
An additional complication is that BRIEF is such a similar word, a factor that definitely caught me out.
Nor was I helped by my choice of the best Wordle starting words; STARE left 181 possible solutions, while SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, left 329 and SLANT left 530. But therein lies a clue to the relatively low average score – because the most popular option, ADIEU, reduced it to just 11!
After receiving a yellow E and R, I was worried this was going to be an ER answer – which I hate and regularly struggle with. So, for my second guess, I played COLIN – a word that I didn’t expect to be a valid answer, but which enabled me to rule in/out five more common letters. WordleBot liked it, saying it would have been one of its top picks too – but it was unlucky and merely gave me a yellow I.
I decided to test the ER theory next, so went with DIVER – which WordleBot also loved. And to my surprise, this confirmed that actually it couldn’t be an ER answer; the E was where I thought it was, but not the R.
After that, it was a simple matter to identify that I had just two possible answers left: BRIEF and GRIEF. That was a relief, because it meant 5/6 was the worst score I could get. And lo and behold that is the score I got; BRIEF was wrong and I was left to play GRIEF on the fifth go for a disappointing score.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #698)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #698)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #698) was… SHORN.
Finally, we have a slightly more difficult Wordle answer, albeit only slightly. WordleBot says people are solving it in an average of 4.0 guesses, so about the norm for the game but a little tougher than the previous few.
The letters are mostly very common. H is the outlier – it’s the only one of the five outside of the top 10 – but it’s one of the more likely letters to be found in position #2, regularly following T and indeed S. O, R and N, meanwhile, are common letters in general, and N is the eighth most likely to end an answer. That said, we haven’t had one there since HUMAN back in January.
It was probably one that I found easier than most, because my choice of the best Wordle starting words, STARE, left me with a mere 10 possible answers. That was the best result of the most popular options; SLATE left 69 possible solutions, CRANE 17 and ADIEU 217!
With two green letters in place after my opening word, I figured I was in a good place for a decent score, and a little hunting for words that fit confirmed my instinct. I could only find eight possibles: SHORN, SWORN, SCORN, SHIRK, SMIRK, SLURP, SPURN and SWIRL. However, WordleBot pointed out after the game that I’d somehow missed SORRY and SWORD. Whoops!
Fortunately, that didn’t come back to haunt me, because I got lucky with my second guess. Based on the words I had found, I played CHINK, reasoning that it would rule in or out almost all of the words in one go. And so it proved: the H turned green and the N turned yellow, and that – coupled with the fact that the C stayed gray – meant that only one word would now fit.
That word was SHORN, and I played it next guess for a 3/6. What’s more, my Wordle streak reached the 500 mark at the same point. Next stop, 600!

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
