Wordle hints (game #718) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has two vowels*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #718) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is H.

H is not a particularly common starting letter in Wordle: only 69 games begin with it, and it ranks in 15th place.

Wordle hints (game #718) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #718) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is R.

R is a very common letter to end a Wordle answer – it’s actually the 4th most common there, behind E, Y and T.

Wordle hints (game #718) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #718) is… HATER.

Here we go again, then. Today’s Wordle is one of the absolute worst kind. Or rather, it’s two of the absolute worst kind.

Firstly, it’s an ER-ending word, which I hate – and with good reason. These are the blockers of the Wordle world, the complicating, obfuscating, get-in-your-way words that never fail to cause problems with their look-at-how-many-possible-answers-I-have attitude. HATER? I’m an ER word hater, for sure.

Secondly, it belongs to a particularly nasty subset of Wordle words I shall call the Opening Letter Paralysis Inducers. These also include -OUND (HOUND, FOUND, MOUND, SOUND and so on) and -ATCH (CATCH, WATCH, BATCH, MATCH etc).

So it’s a double whammy, a Christmas-has-been-cancelled storm of trouble for unwary Wordlers, and one which currently has an average score of 4.6, according to WordleBot.

Remarkably, though, I navigated it with a lot less trouble than I might have done, thanks to a combination of luck and foolhardiness.

First, the luck. My choice of the best Wordle starting words is always STARE, and here it was very fortunate, giving me yellow T, A, R and E and reducing my possible answers list to 20. That was among the best results today, with only TRACE (15) and CARTE (12) below it of the top picks. In contrast, SLATE left 43 and ADIEU 73.

I didn’t come up with a list of 20 words, but I had 19 of them: WATER, EATER, CATER, HATER, DATER, RATER, LATER, TAPER, TAKER, TAMER, GREAT, TREAT, TREAD, RATED, ALTER, AFTER, EARTH and CARET. The two I missed, according to WordleBot? RETAG (fair enough) and TATER (really?).

Looking at that list, my first concern was finding out if indeed it was the worst scenario, ie an -ATER one. So I played LATER with the knowledge that even if wrong it would narrow down the options quite considerably and there was no reason to panic yet.

And, of course, it was an -ATER word – at which point panic did set in a little.

Now I had two options. I could blindly guess -ATER words and hope I got lucky, or I could find a word that would help me narrow down the list. Usually I’d take option two, but the more I looked at the options, the less concerned I was.

My list now had six on it: WATER, CATER, HATER, RATER, EATER and DATER. I didn’t have TATER, which WordleBot thinks was an option. However, I knew CATER had been a past Wordle answer, because I remembered it from my early days of playing (game #270, a rather nasty 5/6 during a very tricky run in March 2022).

So I had five to pick from, and of those I didn’t realistically think RATER or DATER would be answers. They’re both technically words, but neither is in regular use. DATED or RATED, sure – but not with ER on the end.

So I decided I had three options left and that with four guesses remaining, it was worth a risk. WATER was the next most likely as a word, but that was wrong, so I went with HATER next. If that had been wrong I’d probably have cut my losses and played a throwaway word next to guarantee a 6/6, but I didn’t need to and gladly walked away with a 4/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #717)

In a different time zone where it’s still Tuesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #717, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had two vowels.
  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was S.
  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was T.
  • Yesterday’s Wordle answer is a lookout.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #717)

Today’s Wordle answer (game #717) is… SCOUT.

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday, I struggled with the rather difficult ENNUI (see below) and scored only a 5/6. Today, I got lucky with SCOUT and scored my first 2/6 in nearly a month.

While I undoubtedly did have some luck, it’s also a much easier Wordle to solve, for most people at least. Indeed, WordleBot gives it an average score of 4.0 – so right in the middle of the difficulty level and way below recent answers such as ENNUI, NANNY and JAZZY.

A glance at the letters explains one reason one: S, C, O and T are all in the top 10 most common Wordle letters, and U sits only just outside it at #11. What’s more, many people play a combination of two or three of those letters in their start word, which will have given those fortunate individuals a particularly good opening today.

That’s certainly what happened to me. I played STARE, as always, and it gave me a green S and yellow T, and reduced my possible solutions list to 23 right away. Others among the best Wordle starting words performed even better, with SLANT (19), TRACE (12) and CARET (three) doing very well, while CRATE and CARTE were both at 24.

With 24 answers to pick from, I would never have expected a 2/6, and nor should I have go one – those odds are far too high. You’ll have to trust me, then, that I really did hit the jackpot with my second guess.

My reasoning was sound, at least (I think).

I drew up a 14-strong list of possible solutions: SCOUT, SPOUT, SHOUT, SNOUT, SHOOT, SNOOT, SCOOT, SILTY, SPLIT, SPILT, SOOTY, SOUTH, SOOTH and SCOOT. The 10 I missed were SHIFT, SIGHT, SWIFT, SIXTH, SMITH, SIXTY, SLOTH, SHUNT, SOFTY and SITUP.

Now, obviously the words I didn’t spot in my (reasonably brief) brainstorm will have skewed my thinking, because many of them contained an I, whereas most of mine had either O, U or both of those vowels. Most of mine either ended with a T, and with one more consonant after the S, or with TH. I nearly played SHOUT, in order to guard against the latter scenario, but figured that if I played SCOUT and the T stayed yellow, I’d have a good idea whether it was a TH ending anyway.

So, SCOUT it was. I didn’t expect it to be the answer, but I hoped it would narrow down my options to just a couple. As it happened, it did better than that, and I celebrated a rather fortunate 2/6.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
