Wordle hints (game #733) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in two places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #733) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is T.

T is one of the most common starting letters in the game, beginning 149 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. That gives it a ranking of fourth in the alphabet, behind only S, C and B.

Wordle hints (game #733) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There is one repeated letter in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #733) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is E.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Wordle hints (game #733) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #733)

Today’s Wordle answer (game #733) is… TASTE.

This Wordle word might look quite easy, but really it’s not. WordleBot, the NYT’s occasionally insightful AI helper tool, says people are solving it in an average of 4.2 guesses, which places it way above the 3.5 figure we’ve had for previous past two days.

Why so high? Well, this is one of our favorite types of Wordle answer – the too-many-options variety.

Is it PASTE? Is it HASTE? WASTE? BASTE? CASTE? No, it’s TASTE! But you might easily have found yourself guessing blindly in search of that first letter, only for it to be the one you least expected (or possibly missed), because it’s a repeated T.

And that’s assuming you had the -ASTE format. The likes of TEASE, STEAM and SLATE were all common guesses today, on account of including four of the same letters.

Against that, some of the best Wordle starting words helped greatly today, including my choice, STARE. That left me with just the six possible solutions above, and it was the same story for anyone who began by playing SLATE. TRACE was even better – just three options there – while CARTE and CRATE (nine each) weren’t too bad either.

The challenge for most people, then, was identifying which first letter went with the -ASTE part of the word. I decided not to blindly guess, after my harrowing experience with CRANE yesterday (see below) and instead played THUMP. This could have left me a 50/50 in the worst-case scenario; if the T didn’t turn green and the H and P stayed gray, I’d have to pick between CASTE and BASTE. Why not also WASTE? Because I (genuinely) recalled that being a past Wordle answer, from about a year ago (game #428).

As it happened, I didn’t need to choose between anything on my third guess, because the T turned green. That meant TASTE had to be the answer and I duly took my 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #732)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #732) was… CRANE.

I suspect quite a few people will be sitting pretty with a 1/6 today – because CRANE is one of the best Wordle starting words and therefore a common opening guess for lots of people. In fact, WordleBot informs me that today some 2% of people picked it as their starter – so well done to all of you. Of course, that means you’ll need a new starter word, because it won’t be coming up again…

That good fortune will undoubtedly have brought down the overall average, which WordleBot says is 3.5 for today’s game. That’s on a par with yesterday’s FROST (see below), but it’s arguably a slightly harder word than that due to there being lots of other words that have a similar format.

My starter word of STARE left me with just 14 possible solutions (SLANT was 10, TRACE, CARTE and CRATE were all at a mere three), but it still somehow took me four more guesses to find it.

I had a list of all of those 14 options – it wasn’t too hard to work out that it would be an -R-A-E game, and there are only so many letters that go before an R or between an A or E. Next, I had to decide which to play. I went with GRACE because lots of my possibles started with G or C and it covered both off. This proved a relatively good choice, because it gave me a yellow C and narrowed down my options to three.

These were CRAVE, CRAZE and CRANE and what I could have done now was play a word that would have further narrowed them down and guaranteed me a 4/6. But I wasn’t about to do that. There was no chance of me losing my streak, so I figured I’d play the odds.

Unfortunately, those odds were against me today: I played CRAVE first, then CRAZE, and had to settle for a 5/6 when I finally went with CRANE. Frustrating!

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
