B is a very, very common starting letter in Wordle. In fact, it’s the third most common overall, behind only S and C.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

P is a middling end letter in Wordle. It features in 56 answers, which places it 12th in the alphabet. Don’t expect it to happen that often compared to the likes of E, Y and T.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #742)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #742) is… BLEEP.
What a nice word BLEEP is. It’s slightly onomatopoeic, which is always a good thing in my book. Plus, lots of my favorite things in life go BLEEP.
It was a relatively easy Wordle for me to solve, too, but that was mainly because I had a ridiculous amount of luck on my second and third guesses.
Others won’t have been so lucky – WordleBot says it has an average score of 4.0, and quite a few of the best Wordle starting words left lots of possible solutions today. Among them were TRACE, CRATE and CARTE (all 265), CRANE (275), AUDIO (224) and ADIEU (155). SLANT (64) and SLATE (20) were better.
My pick, STARE, was not; that left 249 possible solutions, which is 246 more than the number I had to work through yesterday (see below). Fortunately, my second guess cut it right back to leave me just three.
My second word was CLOUD – not a word that could have been correct, given it didn’t contain the E that I knew had to be included, but one that enabled me to rule out three more common consonants and two more vowels.
As it happened, it didn’t rule them all out, because it confirmed the L in position #2. I figured I’d still have lots of possible solutions to choose from, but when I looked I could find just one: BLEEP.
However, that was where my second stroke of luck came in. WordleBot told me after the game that I could also have played either ELEGY or ELFIN, but I missed them entirely. I guessed BLEEP thinking it was my only option and when all five letters turned green, was pleased with a job well done. It was only later, when I consulted WordleBot, that I realized I’d just come out the right side of a 1/3 guess. I’ll take it!

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #741)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #741)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #741) was… STRAW.
There’s a distinct sense of deja vu about today’s Wordle word. Just two weeks ago (game #727) the answer was STRAP, and today’s STRAW differs from it by only one letter.
Perhaps strangely, this answer has a much higher average score: 4.0, according to WordleBot, versus just 3.5 for STRAP. That’s presumably because P is a much more common letter than W, and is also likely to feature in far more of the best Wordle starting words.
W aside, it should be a straightforward puzzle to solve; it contains four of the most common letters in the game, in the form of S, T, R and A. All four of those feature in my preferred start word, STARE, a fact which contributed greatly towards me only having three possible answers after my first guess!
Several other start words fared almost as well, with CARTE (5), CARET (6), SLATE (8) and SLANT (10) all particularly helpful.
While WordleBot said I had three solutions to choose from, I knew there were really just two: STRAY and STRAW. Two weeks ago, I went with STRAY first and had to settle for a 3/6 when the answer was STRAP. Today… I went with STRAY first and had to settle for a 3/6 when the answer was STRAW. That’s just how it goes sometimes.
Still, next time this pattern appears I will be guaranteed a 2/6 – well, assuming I can remember what happened the previous times…

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
