Wordle hints (game #757) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in two places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #757) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is T.

T is one of the most common starting letters in the game, beginning 149 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. That gives it a ranking of fourth in the alphabet, behind only S, C and B.

Wordle hints (game #757) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #757) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is Z.

Z is the fifth least common ending letter in Wordle. It ends a mere four of the original 2,309 answers and only U, V, Q and J are less likely to be found in this position.

Wordle hints (game #757) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #757)

Today’s Wordle answer (game #757) is… TOPAZ.

It’s not been a particularly hard week in Wordle-land. Monday started off with a tough one, FOLLY, but since then all six puzzles have been at or below the standard 4.0 average. Today’s comes in at 3.9 to round the week off with another straightforward one.

I say that, but in some ways TOPAZ is anything but a straightforward Wordle word. I scored a 4/6 today following a run of five 3/6s in a row, and it’s definitely harder than other recent ones, whatever the average score might suggest.

Obviously that’s partly because it ends in a Z, the fourth least common letter in the game and the fifth least common to be found in the #5 position in an answer. But you can also add in the fact that P is not the most common middle letter by any stretch, and that A is far more likely to be found in positions #2 or #3 than it is in #4 as it is here.

Of course TOPAZ is also a potentially more obscure word than many of the recent ones, and far less likely to jump immediately to mind than, say, CRONE, WHIRL or EARTH.

Nor will many of the best Wordle starting words have narrowed things down much; TRACE left 23 possible solutions, but the other top choices were all above 50, with SLATE at 64 and my favored STARE at 87.

I didn’t attack my game in the best possible way, either. What I should probably have done is narrowed down where either the A or T went by playing a word that contained two of them, something WordleBot regularly does. It did so again today, suggesting that TAINT would have been a better second guess than PAINT, which is what I chose.

Well, maybe. TAINT still left three possible solutions, whereas PAINT left just two: APTLY and TOPAZ. Then again, I still didn’t know where the T went, or indeed where the A or P were located; all were still yellow after my second guess.

I went with APTLY, as the more common word of the two, but guessed wrong. All three of my uncovered letters stayed yellow once again, but at least for my fourth go I knew there was only one way they could be arranged. That was in TOPAZ, and it gave me a 4/6 score.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #756)

In a different time zone where it’s still Saturday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #756, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.
  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was C.
  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was E.
  • Yesterday’s Wordle answer is an old person.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #756)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #756) was… CRONE.

I suspect there will be some very happy Wordlers today, and some who are less chirpy. WordleBot says CRONE has an average score of 4.0, but people who started with certain options among the best Wordle starting words will undoubtedly have got a 3/6 or even 2/6 today.

That’s because CRONE is only one letter away from CRANE, which is both one of the best and one of the most common starting words out there. If you played CRANE, you only had one option left for your second go, in which case you had a nailed-on 2/6.

If you started with CRATE or TRACE you only had five to pick from, while CARTE was at six. A 2/6 was a distinct possibility there, a 3/6 almost a certainty. But if you didn’t go with one of those… well, then your task may have been a lot harder, because CRONE is otherwise not particularly easy. The crucial thing is that it uses very common letters in every position, which usually means that if you don’t start with at least two or three of those letters in the right positions, you may have faced many, many options on subsequent guesses.

I began with STARE, for instance, which left 52 possibles despite the fact that I had a yellow R and green E. I could have gone down the path of guessing at that stage: CRIME, for instance, was a popular second guess. But there wasn’t really enough information for me to risk doing that. Instead, I played POUND; it couldn’t be right, but it was designed to eliminate as many options as I could.

And in that regard, it worked amazingly well. I now had a yellow O and green N to add to my collection, which meant I could only play words with the patten OR-NE, O-RNE, R-ONE or -RONE. The first three of those didn’t have any solutions, leaving me with just the latter, and CRONE.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
