Wordle hints (game #761) – clue #1 – Vowels
How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?
• Wordle today has a vowel in one place*.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
Wordle hints (game #761) – clue #2 – first letter
What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?
• The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is F.
F is a very common starting letter in Wordle. It ranks seventh behind only S, C, B, T, P and A and overall there are 135 solutions that begin with this letter.
Wordle hints (game #761) – clue #3 – repeated letters
Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?
• There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
Wordle hints (game #761) – clue #4 – ending letter
What letter does today’s Wordle end with?
• The last letter in today’s Wordle is K.
K is much more common at the end of a Wordle answer than at the start, and in fact ranks ninth overall in this regard.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #761)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #761) is… FLANK.
If yesterday’s TONIC was a respite from a tricky type of Wordle word for Tuesday’s FLYER, then today sees a return to the difficult side of the game. Like FLYER, FLANK has an average Wordle score of 4.3, making it well above the norm for the game. And like FLYER, it presents a particular type of challenge.
In this case, that’s the too-many-answers conundrum, because FLANK shares its format with multiple other possible answers. The LAN bit in the middle is the key: that also crops up in the likes of BLANK, PLANK, CLANK, BLAND, CLANG, PLANT, SLANT and SLANG. If you didn’t get all of those letters early on you might also have been considering words such as as FLACK and FLASK, or FLING, FLUNG and FLUNK.
For that reason, SLANT was obviously one of the best Wordle starting words to play today; it left just eight possible solutions. SLATE (21) and CRANE (20) were also pretty good. My choice – STARE – was less helpful, as I still had 43 answers to whittle down.
With a single green A in the middle I might have been tempted to play a word such as BLAND next, purely because it has a lot of common consonants either side of the vowel. According to WordleBot, 5% of players did go with that as their second guess. But PLANK (10%) and CLOUD (9%) were more common still. WordleBot suggested CLUNK was the best choice, but I went with the similar CLING.
This gave the green L and N either side of my A and narrowed down my choices to just four: PLANK, FLANK, BLANK and BLAND. I figured BLANK was the sensible next guess, as it would point the way to BLAND if the B turned green but the K didn’t, and would eliminate one of the three other choices if the B went gray and the K turned green.
WordleBot agreed: it would have played BLANK next too. But it was wrong. I now had a 50/50, but for once guessed correctly, playing FLANK for my 4/6. It was only after the game that I realized PLANK had been a past Wordle answer anyway (in May this year, game #697; maybe I subconsciously recalled it and that’s why I didn’t choose it again today. Either way, I got lucky.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #760)
In a different time zone where it’s still Wednesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #760, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.
- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was T.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was C.
- Yesterday’s Wordle answer will fix what ails you.
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #760)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #760) was… TONIC.
This is a far simpler Wordle than yesterday’s FLYER, and indeed than Monday’s DROOP. Just three common consonants and two vowels in an alternating pattern and with no pesky repeated letters or annoying ER endings.
WordleBot says people are solving it in 3.7 guesses on average, which is about what I’d expect for a word like this – particularly as a couple of the best Wordle starting words made life a lot easier today. TRACE, for instance, left just four possible solutions; CRANE (18) and CRATE/CARTE (both 24) were not too bad either.
Unfortunately my choice, STARE, was not so helpful. It only gave me a yellow T and left me with 119 possible answers, which is about 100 too many for my liking. Fortunately, my second guess was a lot more helpful.
I always play POINT when faced with a single-T opening, partly because is very common at the end of a Wordle (it’s the third most common ending letter in the game, behind only E and Y) and partly because it enables me to include the next two most common vowels after A and E, plus the generally-common-everywhere N.
POINT came up trumps for me today, and then some – with a green O and yellow I and N to add to the still-yellow T, I now had four of the five letters. What’s more, I only had two possible answers remaining; quite the reduction from 119.
Those two were TONIC and TOXIN, and with a 4/6 my worst-case-scenario now it didn’t matter which I went for. I couldn’t recall either having been a past Wordle answer, so went with the one that didn’t include an X. That was TONIC, and it gave me a simple 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
