Wordle hints (game #764) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in two places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #764) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is W.

W is a fairly average letter when it comes to starting an answer. There are 82 solutions that begin with a W, with means that it ranks 13th – so right in the middle of the alphabet.

Wordle hints (game #764) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #764) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is E.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Wordle hints (game #764) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #764)

Today’s Wordle answer (game #764) is… WHALE.

OK, this has gone far enough – I really, really need to do some homework and learn the past Wordle answers list. In three out of the last four Wordles I’ve forgotten that one possible solution had already appeared as an answer, and in the the last two of them, it’s cost me a guess.

With yesterday’s game, I forgot that GROVE had been an answer before and played that before eventually choosing FROZE. Today, the choice was between LEAVE and WHALE and, yes, I went for the wrong one first.

In my defence, LEAVE was an answer way back in October 2022 (game #469), so it’s fair enough that I didn’t recall it. Then again, I do take this game seriously, and it is a (small) part of my job.

WHALE should really have been an easy one – WordleBot says people are solving it in just 3.4 guesses, compared to 4.9 for FROZE. But I suspect that figure is artificially low because SLATE, mathematically the best Wordle starting word overall, left just two possible answers today. Given that 3% of people began with it, you’d expect all of those to have scored a 2/6 or 3/6, thus bringing down the average.

My starter word, STARE, was not quite so successful – it left 27 possibles. But my second guess, BLIND, narrowed things down very nicely, leaving me with just those two words, LEAVE and WHALE. I honestly had no idea whether either had appeared before, so played LEAVE as the more common word and got it wrong. So, a frustrating 4/6 for me.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #763)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #763) was… FROZE.

You thought yesterday’s Wordle was tough? It’s nothing compared to today’s!

According to WordleBot, the NYT’s all-knowing AI helper tool, FROZE has an average score of 4.9. That makes it the hardest game since COWER two weeks ago and one of the most difficult of 2023 so far. In fact, it’s the seventh hardest of the year to date.

Like two of those above it in the difficulty list, it contains a Z. And like several others, it has a format that contains multiple similar words with the same structure and just one or two letters differing. For instance, the -RO-E structure also contains GROVE, BROKE, DRONE, CRONE, DROVE, PROBE, PRONE, PROSE, PROVE, TROPE, AROSE and WROTE. And if you didn’t have the O in place… well, then there are many dozens of other options.

Despite that, some of the best Wordle starting words will have helped you narrow them down. If you chose TRACE (25), CRATE (also 25) or CRANE (29) then you didn’t have too many to navigate. SLATE (123) and SLANT (531) were not so useful, though.

My choice, STARE, was in the middle – it left 52 possible solutions. Rather than blindly guess, I decided that I had better play it safe; though I had a green E already, I knew that I’d have a better chance of getting a good score if I didn’t play that on my second go. I left out the yellow R, too, and instead went with POUND. This is exactly what WordleBot said it would have done – great minds and all that – and it reduced my options to just three.

That might seem unlikely at first glance; all it had given me was a yellow O. But by ruling out the P and D I’d eliminated a couple of the most common letters to go before an R at the start of a Wordle answer. I knew the O wouldn’t be second, so was probably looking at a format of -RO-E. And if that were the case then my choices were just GROVE, FROZE and BROKE.

If I’d have checked the past Wordle answers list, I’d have scored a 3/6 today – because both GROVE and BROKE have been solutions before. I didn’t check the list, but I did remember BROKE, because it was only a few months ago (game #672 in April). GROVE came back in October 2022 (game #489), and had by now been expunged from my memory, though.

No matter. I played GROVE first, then when that was wrong played FROZE next and scored my 4/6. And on a day like today, that will do just fine.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
