Wordle hints (game #770) – clue #1 – Vowels
How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?
• Wordle today has a vowel in one place*.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
Wordle hints (game #770) – clue #2 – first letter
What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?
• The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is C.
C is a very common starting letter in Wordle – in fact, it’s the second most common of all, behind only S.
Wordle hints (game #770) – clue #3 – repeated letters
Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?
• There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
Wordle hints (game #770) – clue #4 – ending letter
What letter does today’s Wordle end with?
• The last letter in today’s Wordle is Y.
Y is the second most common ending letter in the game, behind only E. In total, 364 Wordle answers end with a Y.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #770)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #770) is… CURLY.
There’s no pleasing some people. Or rather, there’s no pleasing me. When Wordle periodically throws up one of its horrendously difficult answers – usually something ending in an ER, sometimes a word that just shouldn’t be in the game, such as BORAX – I complain loudly about it. But I also get quite bored when we have a run like the one we’re currently in the midst of.
Today’s answer, CURLY, has an average score of 3.9, according to WordleBot. That’s the fifth puzzle in a row (and the sixth in the past week) with an average below 4.0. Come on, NYT – make it harder! Not too hard. But just the right kind of hard. We’re after the Goldilocks Wordle here.
I’m being unfair; there’s nothing wrong with CURLY as a Wordle word. But if the NYT is now curating answers (and we know that it is) then is it wrong to ask for a bit more variety? Maybe. I’m probably just in a bad mood.
Anyway! CURLY is a perfectly fine Wordle answer. It starts with the second most common starting letter in the game, ends in the second most common ending letter in the game, and contains two others among the top 10 most common letters. U, which sits at no.11, is only just outside that list. With no repeated letters either, there’s really nothing to complicate matters here, if you played it sensibly.
By that, I mean that you started with one of the best Wordle starting words (CARTE, which left eight possible solutions, was the top pick today) then followed up with another word designed to narrow things down, rather than necessarily one that might have been the answer. Stop chasing the 2/6s, they only happen when you already have a mere handful of words to choose from.
In my case, STARE had given me a single yellow R and left me with 123 options. I always play CRONY in this scenario, and it usually works well. CRONY might have been the answer, but more importantly it established that a) the R went in the second position, b) it ended in a Y and c) it didn’t contain an O.
The fact that the C turned green at the start was a bonus, and contributed greatly to my now having only two words to choose from. They were CURLY and CURVY, and with no particular reason to pick one over the other, I went with the option that contained the more common letters (so L, not V). That proved to be a lucky guess and gave me a 3/6. Plus, I beat WordleBot (4/6), which is always nice.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #769)
In a different time zone where it’s still Friday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #769, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.
- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was E.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was S.
- Yesterday’s Wordle answer is a set of guiding beliefs.
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #769)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #769) was… ETHOS.
It’s not often that we get four Wordles in a row with an average score of below 4.0, but that’s what we have after today’s game. ETHOS has an average of just 3.7, according to WordleBot – following 3.9 for DISCO yesterday (see below), 3.2 for HEART and 3.9 for WHEEL.
ETHOS was a particularly straightforward game for me, because my pick of the best Wordle starting words is always STARE, and today that left just one possible solution. Yes, that’s right – ETHOS was the only word I could have played next that might have been the answer (and indeed, was the answer).
Interestingly (to me at least), not everyone who started with STARE followed up with ETHOS, though. According to WordleBot, 12% went with ITEMS – which couldn’t have been the answer, because plural words are never solutions in Wordle. Some 5% went with CLOUD and 3% went with OTHER; I can only suppose that in those cases the players simply didn’t think of ETHOS and so played a word that would give them more information, even though it couldn’t be correct.
Admittedly, it did take me a while to come up with ETHOS myself – I knew that my letters could only be arranged in seven different ways (ETS–, -TSE-, ET-S-, -TES-, ET–S, -TE-S and -T-ES) but try as I might I couldn’t find a word that fit any of them. The problem was that I’d all but dismissed the ET–S option because S very rarely ends a Wordle; it begins 365 answers, but only finishes 36 of them. Eventually, though, I did consider that format and came up with ETHOS after a bit more thinking time.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
