Wordle hints (game #784) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in two places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #784) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is Q.

Q is one of the least likely letters to start a Wordle answer – but then again, it’s also one of the least common letters in the game anywhere!

Wordle hints (game #784) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #784) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is K.

K is much more common at the end of a Wordle answer than at the start, and in fact ranks ninth overall in this regard.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #784) is… QUICK.

To look at it, you might think that today’s Wordle word would be a very difficult one to uncover. After all, it starts with a Q – the second least common of all letters in the game, ahead of only J. Plus, it contains a K – only 20th in terms of appearances.

However, a couple of factors make it a little easier than you might think, to the extent that its average score, according to WordleBot, is just 3.9 – placing it below the likes of HELLO, BULLY, BROOK and LOVER among recent games.

One of those factors is that Q is not quite so uncommon at the start of a word as it is elsewhere; it’s 21st in this regard. Another is that K is actually quite common at the end, where it’s the ninth most likely letter.

But a bigger factor is that there aren’t many other words that have a similar format. If you established that C goes in position #4, for instance, you’d know that it would likely be followed by a K, H or Y. If you discovered the U in position #2, a Q before it is always a possibility. Plus, QUICK is itself a very common word.

I started, as always, with one of the best Wordle starting words – in my case, STARE. This was no help at all today, giving me five gray letters and 319 possible solutions. I followed, as always in this scenario, with CLOUD – and here I had some luck. The C and U turned yellow, giving me a few ideas about what the answer could be.

WordleBot said there were nine words left, and I found six of them: MUNCH, HUNCH, BUNCH, PUNCH, YUCKY and MUCKY. With that in mind, I played PUNCH, figuring that it would at least tell me which of those formats to persevere with.

As WordleBot told me afterwards – and as I knew right away – I’d made a mistake here; it would have made a lot more sense to have played another narrowing down word, for instance the ‘Bot’s suggestion of IMPLY. If the answer had been HUNCH, BUNCH, or MUNCH, I’d still have had only a 1/3 chance of getting a 4/6 and could have ended up with a 6/6.

Still, I got away with it. The U and C both turned green, but the H didn’t – which meant I must have missed some possible answers. Another search led me to two options, QUICK and JUICY. I couldn’t see any others, so figured a 5/6 was the worst I’d score. With no reason to choose one over the other, I went with QUICK simply because it seemed a more likely answer, and was rewarded with a 4/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #783)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #783) was… HELLO.

Hi! Pleased to meet you! You’re one of those Wordle answers that I think must have been a solution before, but that inexplicably hasn’t been.

And really, why should it have been? Just because HELLO is one of the most common words in the English language, there’s no reason why it should have been one of the 783 past Wordle answers. Although let’s be honest, it feels lik it ought to have been.

Maybe that familiarity explains why today’s answer only warrants an average score of 4.0, according to WordleBot, because it has the components to be a harder answer than that. For instance, it has a double-L – common as repeated letters go, but still a lot less likely than a non-double, with only 59 instances among Wordle’s 2,309 original solutions.

Plus, it starts with an H – only the 15th most common starting letter – and ends with an O, the 11th most common final letter. In many ways, the E is the only expected letter out of the five, and even that is less likely in position #2 (fourth) than it is in general (first).

So, what we have here is a common word and a slightly less common selection of letters (or at least letter positions), so maybe it’s fair enough that it adds up to a standard 4.0 overall.

If you started with any of the best Wordle starting words you might have thought it would be harder than that, because none helped very much. SLATE left 95 options, but TRACE (265), CRANE (275) and STARE (249) were all a long way behind that, and even 95 possible solutions is too many for comfort.

My second choice, BLEND, has generally given me good results; but today, not so much. The E stayed yellow and was joined by a yellow L, leaving me with 18 possible solutions still.

I didn’t know that – WordleBot only told me after the game – but I could see there were too many to choose from, so decided to (try to) turn those yellows green by repeating them both. LEVEL was my word of choice, and it did the trick. The E turned green and the L, though still yellow, was joined by another yellow L. The two of them could only now go in two spaces, giving me -ELL-.

WordleBot said afterwards that I now had just three words, though I identified five: HELLO, CELLO, JELLY, JELLO and WELLY. The latter two were the ones WordleBot didn’t recognize. Either way, it made sense to play HELLO next – not only was it the most common of the remaining words, but it also guaranteed no worse than a 6/6 even if it had been wrong. No, I didn’t want to score a 6/6 – but I’d settle for it above a failure. Not that I needed to worry, because HELLO was indeed the answer, giving me a par 4/6.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
