Today’s Wordle answer (game #801)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #801) is… CAPER.
Generally, Wordle words that end in ER are among the hardest type to uncover. That pattern of consonant-vowel-consonant-ER has many, many possibilities and working out which letters go in positions #1 and #3 can be a major problem. But no so much today. Well, so long as you chose a fortunate starting word.
WordleBot says this one has an average score of 4.1, placing it below that of many ER games; the previous couple of examples, for instance, were LOVER and FLYER, both of which had a score of 4.3, while the likes of COWER (5.0), HATER (4.6) and JOKER (5.4) were all way above that.
The reason why this isn’t quite so bad as some others? A couple of the best Wordle starting words were very lucky today. CRATE (four possible solutions), CRANE (6) and TRACE (8) were all pretty good, while CARTE and CARET left just one answer. Not that many people begin with the latter two, but 1% started with CRANE, so that will inevitably have reduced the average.
Even without that, finding a C and P is a lot easier than uncovering the L and V for LOVER or the C and W for COWER, let alone the J and K for JOKER.
It still took me four guesses to solve it, mind. My second attempt was RADAR, a word I thought would help me place the A and R, thus ruling out both a) non ER words and b) words that started with R. As it happened, it ruled in ER words, with the second R turning green but the first one staying gray. Still, with the A turning green in position #2, I was now almost certain that this was an -A-ER game.
I’d had 80 possible solutions left after my first guess, while RADAR had reduced those to a still sizeable 21. CAMEL, which WordleBot would have played, left just two. Oh well.
I had a nice long list of my own, and could see that there was no point in me shooting for the answer yet; it could be EAGER or WAGER or PACER or CAPER or LAYER or MAKER or BAKER of PALER or any of a dozen or so more. So, I played another spoiler word: PLUCK.
I thought this was a decent choice, but WordleBot wasn’t so sure, awarding me just 68/99 for skill. Yeah, well what does the ‘Bot know? Not much, seemingly, as PLUCK gave me yellow C and P and reduced my answer list to just one, CAPER. I played that next for a perfectly acceptable 4/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #800)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #800) was… WRITE.
So, Wordle brings up the 800 with an answer that (like WORDY last week) is rather apt for the game. Although technically, this isn’t game #800 – it’s game #801, as the first solution (CIGAR) was game #0.
Anyway, there’s no disputing the fact that it’s a rather simple puzzle, made easier still if you picked one of the best Wordle starting words. Most helped greatly today; SLATE cut the options list to 14, and my choice, STARE, to 14. But TRACE left just three, CRATE was at four, CARTE at five and TRICE… well, that left just one answer and a guaranteed 2/6.
I didn’t score 2/6, but I came away with a 3/6 thanks to a fortunate second guess. I came up with 13 of the 16 possible answers open to me, missing TRIKE, FORTE and RETIE, and decided that rather than narrow them down further with a spoiler word I’d have a guess at it today. My choice was TRIBE and it was very, very lucky; I got a green R, green I and was left with just the one answer. I played WRITE next for my 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
