Today’s Wordle answer (game #816)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #816) is… CLEAR.
What’s the easiest Wordle ever? Well, based on WordleBot’s reported scores for the games so far, that would be SLATE, with an average of 1.5 – obviously helped by the fact that it’s a common start word (and very similar to the likes of STARE, STALE, SLANT etc). After that, of the 400-odd games that I have scores for (WordleBot didn’t launch until mid 2022), there’s only one other game below 3.0 (PLATE, 2.9) then another seven below 3.4.
Why do I tell you this? Because CLEAR is in the next group, with an average score of 3.4, making it the equal 10th easiest yet.
Much of that will again be due to the performance of the best Wordle starting words; SLATE left just nine possible solutions, while CRANE (6), TRACE (8), CRATE (4), CARTE (5), CARET (8) and LANCE (5) were all better still.
However, that’s not the only factor. The five letters in use here are about as common as they get in Wordle – in fact, they’re four of the six most common overall, plus C, which is 10th in general, but the second most likely to begin an answer.
I solved it in 3/6 again, but did enjoy a big slice of luck on my way to that score. My opening STARE left 80 solutions, but my second word, CHIMP, cut that down to just four. Of those, I recalled CEDAR as having been a past Wordle answer (game #679), while CARED – one of WordleBot’s solutions – didn’t occur to me. That’s partly because I didn’t think Wordle included the past participles of verbs (ie past tense verbs that end in ED, such as LIKED and LOVED). It’s not a hard and fast rule – there are none published at any rate – but it seems to be the case based on what’s gone before.
That meant I was choosing between CLEAR and CREAK and of those I went for the first one. I guessed correctly and scored another 3/6 – my seventh in a row.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #815)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #815) was… WHISK.
You might think that any Wordle word that begins with a W, ends with a K, includes an S in an uncommon position and doesn’t feature any of the six most common letters in the game at all would be a nightmare to solve. But no. According to WordleBot, WHISK has an average score of just 3.9, making it easier than many answers, including yesterday’s OLDER (see below).
Why? Well, it certainly wasn’t anything to do with the performance of the best Wordle starting words, because none had a major impact on proceedings. SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, still left 64 possible solutions, a little higher than the figure for my pick, STARE, at 56. The likes of CRANE, TRACE, CRATE and SLANT were all above 100 (considerably so in some cases), and of the top dozen options only LEAST made real headway, cutting the numbers down to 32.
So it wasn’t starting words, and it certainly wasn’t letters in general. Instead, I suspect there just aren’t many words that have a similar format to WHISK, meaning that once you got a couple of letters (particularly if you turned any green) you only had a small pool to pick from. Or maybe everyone is just getting a lot better at Wordle…
Luck may well have been a factor for some people, and it definitely was for me. With more than 50 words open to me for my second guess, I needed a word that would cut down those options and got it in the form of PUSHY.
I choose that word in part because of where the S might go. S is an odd letter in this regard: it’s by far the most common letter to start an answer (featuring in 365 answers), but hardly every crops up in position #2 (16 games) or position #5 (36). It is reasonably common in the middle (80 games) and rather more so in fourth place (171).
And that makes sense, if you think of the letters that typically follow an S – for instance SH or SK are common ending combinations. –SHY and –SKY are also common – I had PUSHY, BUSHY, FISHY, MUSHY, CUSHY, MUSKY, DUSKY and HUSKY on my list, plus quite a few with double-S (MISSY, HISSY, KISSY, BOSSY, MOSSY). Plus, without the Y I had the likes of PLUSH and BLUSH, so something in that -USHY format was sound thinking.
WordleBot agreed to an extent, awarding me 92/99 for skill. It preferred HOKUM, but either option would have left just two possible answers: WHISK and WOOSH. I went with the one that didn’t have a repeated letter, WHISK, and scored yet another 3/6 – my sixth in a row and 11th in the past 14. I’ll take that.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
