Wordle hints (game #817) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in two places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #817) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is R.

R is a surprisingly uncommon starting letter. Despite ranking third overall in Wordle, it’s merely the 11th most likely to begin an answer.

Wordle hints (game #817) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #817) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is N.

N is a pretty common ending letter in Wordle: it’s the seventh most likely in that position and features in 130 solutions.

Wordle hints (game #817) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #817)

Today’s Wordle answer (game #817) is… RAYON.

All good things come to an end, and after a full week of 3/6 scores today I had to accept a 5/6. Then again, RAYON is a potentially difficult puzzle to solve, and one which WordleBot says has an average score of 4.1.

It’s difficult for two reasons. Firstly, as a word it’s not an obvious one, to me at least. I sometimes use the website Wordandphraseinfo to validate my thoughts on a Wordle being obscure, in case I’m an outlier and everyone else uses that particular word regularly. But on that basis, RAYON is indeed quite uncommon; it’s ranked 25,901st by frequency in the English language. To put that in context, the previous two answers were 563rd (CLEAR) and 6,399th (WHISK). ROUSE, a potentially slightly more uncommon word from last week, was 11,197th. GNASH was slightly higher (31,011st) but then again, I also scored a 5/6 on that…

The other aspect is that Y in the middle, which is not that common at all – it only occurs in 29 Wordle answers, as opposed to 364 games in which it ends a word.

Still, some people will have had a slightly easier time of it if they played certain examples of the best Wordle starting words. For instance, CRANE left just 16 possible answers and CRONE 19. That may have helped keep the score a little lower than you’d otherwise expect.

I had 82 possible solutions and knew that playing CAROL next would give me my best chance of solving today’s game quickly. That’s because I remembered doing that before having ended the first guess with a yellow A and yellow R. WordleBot agreed: it’s exactly what it would have played too.

That was quite unlucky, though. While it gave me a green A and O, it still left eight possible answers. I came up with five of these: RAZOR, RADON, MAYOR, MAJOR and VAPOR. I also ruled out FAVOR and MANOR as past Wordle answers. (MAJOR had also been one, I realized afterwards, but I didn’t remember that at the time.)

So, I missed one – which turned out to be answer. Cue two more rounds of me guessing incorrectly (RAZOR and then RADON) before finally realizing that RAYON was the only possible answer left and playing that next for a 5/6. Not my finest hour, maybe, but a potentially difficult game all the same.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #816)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #816) was… CLEAR.

What’s the easiest Wordle ever? Well, based on WordleBot’s reported scores for the games so far, that would be SLATE, with an average of 1.5 – obviously helped by the fact that it’s a common start word (and very similar to the likes of STARE, STALE, SLANT etc). After that, of the 400-odd games that I have scores for (WordleBot didn’t launch until mid 2022), there’s only one other game below 3.0 (PLATE, 2.9) then another seven below 3.4.

Why do I tell you this? Because CLEAR is in the next group, with an average score of 3.4, making it the equal 10th easiest yet.

Much of that will again be due to the performance of the best Wordle starting words; SLATE left just nine possible solutions, while CRANE (6), TRACE (8), CRATE (4), CARTE (5), CARET (8) and LANCE (5) were all better still.

However, that’s not the only factor. The five letters in use here are about as common as they get in Wordle – in fact, they’re four of the six most common overall, plus C, which is 10th in general, but the second most likely to begin an answer.

I solved it in 3/6 again, but did enjoy a big slice of luck on my way to that score. My opening STARE left 80 solutions, but my second word, CHIMP, cut that down to just four. Of those, I recalled CEDAR as having been a past Wordle answer (game #679), while CARED – one of WordleBot’s solutions – didn’t occur to me. That’s partly because I didn’t think Wordle included the past participles of verbs (ie past tense verbs that end in ED, such as LIKED and LOVED). It’s not a hard and fast rule – there are none published at any rate – but it seems to be the case based on what’s gone before.

That meant I was choosing between CLEAR and CREAK and of those I went for the first one. I guessed correctly and scored another 3/6 – my seventh in a row.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
