Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #823)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #823) is… SNARE.
One of the unexpected benefits of Wordle is that it can give your insights into your personality, or at the very least confirm what you already suspected. In my case, for instance, it’s provided ample evidence that I’m usually logical, generally disciplined and prone to being overly cautious. (Or in other words, quite dull, really.)
Today’s game served up a great example of that third character trait, caution. Faced with a one-in-three chance of a 2/6, I instead decided to take a guaranteed 3/6, so as to avoid a possible 4/6. I’d be very interested to know what others in my position did.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. Before I throw myself headlong into self-analysis, let’s talk about today’s Wordle word in general.
SNARE has a surprisingly high average score of 4.0, according to WordleBot, and that’s in large part because it’s one of those words. You know, the kind that has multiple alternatives that differ from it by only a letter or two. Yesterday’s CLOSE had that to an extent (CHOSE, CLONE, CLOVE), as did Sunday’s FRANK (PRANK, CRANK, FLANK).
SNARE has seven near-twins: SHARE, SPARE, SCARE, STARE, SNORE, SNAKE and SNARL, although which ones were open to you will have depended on the way your game developed. And in large part, it will also have depended on which of the best Wordle starting words you chose, if indeed you picked one at all.
My choice, STARE, gave me a great start, leaving just four possibles. But better still was CRANE, which left just one. SLATE (14), TRACE (7), SLANT (9), CRATE (7) and LEANT (3) were also all very good.
So, I had SCARE, SNARE, SPARE and SHARE to pick from, except I didn’t, because I remembered that SCARE had been a past Wordle answer (game #293). So, I had a 1/3 chance of getting it in two, and that’s where my caution kicked in.
Rather than guessing outright and shooting for glory, I decided to guarantee a safe 3/6 by playing PHONE – knowing that whichever of the P, H or N turned yellow (or green in the case of the H) it would point the way to the answer.
In some ways, I should probably have just gone for the 2/6 – if I’d have got my second guess wrong, I’d still have had a 50/50 chance of a 3/6 next time around. The odds were against me scoring a 4/6.
Then again, I would probably have guessed SHARE first, then SPARE next. And if that had happened I would have walked away with a four. Instead, I played it safe and ultimately scored a satisfactory 3/6 – while also learning a little more about myself.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #822)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #822) was… CLOSE.
I’m getting a touch of deja vu for today’s game. Last Wednesday we had CLEAR, a word that contained C, L, E plus two other common letters, and that had an average score of 3.4, making it one of the easiest Wordles yet. Today we have CLOSE, a word that contains C, L, E plus two other common letters and that has an average score of just 3.1, making it easier still. In fact, by my reckoning, it’s the fourth easiest ever, behind only SLATE (1.5), PLATE (2.9) and BRAID (3.0), and level with ATONE (also 3.1).
Why so simple? Well, some of the best Wordle starting words really made a huge difference here. If you played SLATE – WordleBot’s favorite opener – you had just one solution left and a (presumably) guaranteed 2/6. STALE, LANCE and CRONE (all 4) were also quite special, while the likes of CRANE (13), TRACE (18), SLANT (9) and CRATE (12) all will have got you off to a good start.
My choice was STARE, as always, and it didn’t fare quite so well, leaving me 24 possibles. But fortunately my second guess, CLOUD, gave me green C, green L and green O, and left only one answer: CLOSE. I played that next for a 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
