Wordle hints (game #825) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has a vowel in one place*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #825) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is B.

B is a very, very common starting letter in Wordle. In fact, it’s the third most common overall, behind only S and C.

Wordle hints (game #825) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #825) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is H.

H is a regular visitor to the final spot in a Wordle word. It occurs 137 times at the end of a Wordle answer, making it the sixth most common letter there.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #825)

Today’s Wordle answer (game #825) is… BRUSH.

I don’t get a lot of 2/6s in Wordle; in 628 games, I’ve scored 32 (compared to 273 3/6s). That’s partly because I play in quite a cautious way, focusing on preserving my streak rather than getting the highest scores. (Although it’s obviously also because scoring a 2/6 is a lot harder than getting a 3/6!) Anyway, yesterday I went against type and got a two – and today I repeated the feat.

Admittedly, today’s game could be another fairly easy one for most people. WordleBot, the NYT’s online helper tool, says it has an average score of 3.6, well below the 4.0 mark that tends to indicate that puzzles are getting a little harder. That follows 3.4 for yesterday’s STONE (see below) and 3.1 for Tuesday’s CLOSE (via a detour for Wednesday’s SNARE, which was at 4.0). So, we’re in the midst of a quite easy streak here.

BRUSH looks like it might be harder in some ways; there’s no A or E in it, and H is not such a common letter as the others. What’s more, the best Wordle starting words didn’t do such a great job of narrowing down things as they have in recent days. My choice, STARE, was the best performer – leaving me 17 possible answers. But the likes of SLATE (64), CRANE (66) and TRACE (60) were all fairly high.

So, why the low score? I honestly have no idea, beyond the fact that BRUSH is a common word that people may have thought made a good second guess, only to find out that it was indeed a very good second guess.

That’s exactly what happened to me: with yellow S and yellow R, I started thinking about the likely locations for those two letters. R is very common in position #2, where it regularly follows C, B, T, G, F or P. In fact, it’s the third most likely letter to appear in that spot, behind only A and O.

As far as S goes, when it doesn’t appear at the start of a word it’s invariably in position #4; there are 171 games in which that happens, compared to 16 games where it’s second, 80 where it’s third and 36 where it ends an answer.

So, I was looking at -R-S-, and BRUSH seemed a good next guess; I figured that would indicate whether I had the letter placement right, and whether the SH combination was the correct ending. And… well, I lucked out. Not only was it the right format but it was the right answer and I scored a very fortunate 2/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #824)

In a different time zone where it’s still Thursday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #824, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.
  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was S.
  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

  • Yesterday’s Wordle answer is a hard mineral substance.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #824)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #824) was… STONE.

It’s deja-vu time! Today’s game was so similar to yesterday’s game, for me at least, that for a second I thought I’d fallen through a wormhole. There’s an S at the start, an E at the end, another vowel in the middle and two common consonants filling the other spaces.

Like yesterday’s SNARE (see below), it’s also a game that my choice of the best Wordle starting words, STARE, narrowed down to just a handful of options immediately. But unlike yesterday’s game, I handled it in a very different way.

Regardless of how you played it, you’ll probably have had a relatively simple time of things, because STONE is not a difficult Wordle by any means. Where SNARE warranted an average score of 4.0, STONE is a mere 3.3 – right down with the easiest this year.

Much of that is because most of the top starter words made major inroads into your possible answer list. For instance, SLATE and STALE left just four possibles, while SLANT (7), CRONE (6) and SAINT (5) were all in the same ballpark.

STARE left five, but one of those – STYLE – was a past Wordle answer not that long ago (game #772 at the end of July). STOVE was apparently one too, but I didn’t remember that, so I thought I was choosing from four – that one plus STOKE, STONE and STOLE.

Yesterday, I wrote at length about how my natural instincts led me to approach a similar scenario with caution, playing a narrowing-down word that guaranteed a 3/6, rather than shooting for a 2/6. Today, I went the other way. Why? Well, mainly because I wanted to challenge myself! Doing the same two days in a row seemed a bit of a cop-out, logical or not.

Instead, I picked my favorite of the four words. I decided to go for either STONE or STOLE, because they each had a very common final letter (N or L, as opposed to the K in STOKE or the V in STOVE). STONE seemed a more likely answer in general; Wordle tends to favor present tense verbs over past tense, so STEAL rather than STOLE. Admittedly, that’s a feeling on my part rather than anything backed up by evidence (I’ve not looked extensively), but it was enough to push me towards STONE.

And lo and behold, STONE was right! My change of approach gave me a 2/6 – my first since BATHE almost two months ago.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
