Today’s Wordle answer (game #847)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #847) is… AGENT.
We’ve had a fairly easy time of it in Wordle recently. Today’s game has an average score of 3.7, according to WordleBot, following on from 3.6 yesterday and 4.0 the day before. Other than the tricky SKUNK on Wednesday (4.3), all puzzles in the past seven days have at 4.0 or below.
It’s a fairly unremarkable puzzle, with the two most common vowels in A and E, a couple of pretty common consonants in N and T, and only one less likely letter in G. That one is way down in 17th place overall, so not a particularly regular visitor to the game.
It will have been made easier still if you started with CRANE, the second best Wordle starting word according to WordleBot; that left just four possible solutions today. SLANT, which left 10, LEAST (11) and SAINT (7) were all very helpful too.
Somehow, despite it being so straightforward, I could only solve it in 4/6 guesses. Unlucky? To an extent, but I should really have done better.
Things started off in fairly average fashion. My choice, STARE, gave me uncovered three letters, but all were yellow; I’d generally rather have one or two greens than three yellows, because I inevitably spend a couple of guesses chasing them around the board.
This opening left me with 33 options, of which I found about dozen before deciding there were too many to keep searching. This was pure laziness on my part, and was the reason for my score today. Rather than making a second good guess based on all the available evidence I rushed it and played METAL. WordleBot rightly castigated me for that, awarding me a mere 74 for skill.
I now had eight solutions left – if I’d played WordleBot’s suggestion, PLEAT, I’d have had just one. But WordleBot can’t be used until after the game is over, so this is all moot.
I was still chasing the yellows around, and that continued with the third guess, TAKEN. Somehow I’d played three letters in three different positions each and failed to establish where any of them went! Still, the addition of an N, coupled with the fact that there were now hardly any places I could play the E, A and T, led me to AGENT on the next go for a 4/6 score.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #846)
In a different time zone where it’s still Friday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #846, too.

U is not a particularly common starting letter in Wordle, with only 33 answers beginning with it. It ranks 20th in this regard, and is the least common vowel to start an answer.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was E.
E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #846) was… UNCLE.
A nice easy Wordle to end the week, then. WordleBot says it has an average of just 3.6 and really there’s no reason to have struggled with it. Well, unless you got unlucky with your choice of the best Wordle starting words. That seems unlikely, though, because so many of them cut down the options today.
Want proof? SLATE left 26 answers, CRANE 11, TRACE 18, CRATE 23, STALE 15…
None of that should be particularly surprising. Though U is not a common starting letter (it only ranks 20th in that regard), it’s a fairly common letter in general, as are N, C, L and (of course) E.
My game didn’t get off to a great start, with the single green E leaving me with 106 possible solutions and no real idea of which direction to go. No problem – I had my trusty LINGO as my second guess, and than gave me two more letters, yellow L and N. Remarkably, that cut those 106 options to just the one, UNCLE, and I found that fairly quickly for my 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
