Wordle hints (game #865) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in three places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #865) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is N.

N is a surprisingly uncommon starting letter. Only 37 games begin with it and it ranks just 18th in this regard.

Wordle hints (game #865) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #865) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is E.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Wordle hints (game #865) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #865) is… NOISE.

November is off to a nice, easy start with a puzzle that WordleBot says people are solving in an average of only 3.6 guesses. Just four Wordles in October were easier.

Why so simple? Well, obviously it will depend on various factors, but the biggest one is that the five letters that make up this word are all incredibly common. E is the most common overall (and also most common at the end of an answer), while the other two vowels rank 4th and 7th respectively. S, meanwhile, ranks 8th and N ranks 9th. No K or W or even an M or G to complicate things slightly.

Another factor is that a couple of the best Wordle starting words really cut down the answers here. Specifically, a couple of very popular ones that I don’t talk about very much. RAISE is only the 42nd best starter word, according to WordleBot, while ARISE is 87th, but they are regularly among the top choices actually played by people. Today, for instance, 4% began with RAISE and 2% with ARISE; only ADIEU, AUDIO, STARE and SLATE were more popular. And today, both left a mere three possible answers – compared to 32 for SLATE or 24 for STARE.

I imagine most RAISE/ARISE players will have scored a 3/6 today, then, and some will even have walked away with a 2/6, thus bringing down the average score.

For my part, I decided to follow up my opening STARE with CLOUD – a word that couldn’t be right but which was designed to eliminate as many options as possible by playing five extra common letters. And it worked. Though CLOUD only gave me a yellow O, by ruling out C, L, U and D I was left with only four remaining answers.

I will readily admit that I didn’t find them all, though. I spotted NOISE early on in my investigations and decided I’d probably play that. I also found POSSE, but that seemed like a less likely answer. The others, both of which I missed, were POISE and OBESE.

I didn’t have a guaranteed 3/6, then, but played NOISE with a certain amount of confidence and got lucky; it was indeed the answer, meaning I beat WordleBot (4/6) today.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #864)

In a different time zone where it’s still Tuesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #864, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was B.

B is a very, very common starting letter in Wordle. In fact, it’s the third most common overall, behind only S and C.

  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was K.

K is much more common at the end of a Wordle answer than at the start, and in fact ranks ninth overall in this regard.

  • Yesterday’s Wordle answer is barren and depressing.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #864) was… BLEAK.

Was it a BLEAK day for you? Hopefully not. WordleBot says this puzzle has an average score of 4.1, so it might have been on the harder side of things, but it’s not among the worst ones we’ve ever had.

Two of these letters are less common than the other three in general, but very common in their specific positions today. To take B first, it ranks just 18th overall but is the third most likely to start a Wordle answer. That’s one of the biggest differences between general and specific ranking in the game. K is arguably another of those, as it ranks 20th overall but ninth when used at the end of an answer.

Much will have depended, then, on how quickly you identified that one of those two was in the word – because chances are you’ll have had the L, E and A fairly early on.

Not many of the best Wordle starting words contain either a B or a K, but some options did still cut down the possible answers list considerably. SLATE, for instance – WordleBot’s favorite starter – left just nine answers. PLANE was also at nine, while PLATE was at eight.

At the other end of the scale was the likes of my choice, STARE; this left 110 options and pretty much guaranteed that I’d have to settle for a 4/6 today.

I certainly didn’t attempt to write down all of the possible answers at this stage, instead focusing on the dual ambitions of trying to identify where the yellow A and E were and which common consonants were included. My second choice was therefore LADEN, which added the very common L, D and N into the mix.

WordleBot liked that well enough, giving me 93/99 for skill. It also told me that I now had five words left – though I didn’t know that at the time I was playing. Indeed, I only found three myself: EQUAL, BLEAK and GLEAM. The other two, WordleBot said, were FECAL and FELLA.

I was fairly sure EQUAL had been a past Wordle answer and it had – about a year ago, game #481. So in my mind, I had a 50/50 between GLEAM and BLEAK and went for the former as the slightly more likely answer.

This was wrong, but it had the desired effect of leaving just one possible answer. I played BLEAK next and scored a 4/6.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
