Today’s Wordle answer (game #876)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #876) is… MEANT.
As Wordle weekends goes, this has been one of the easiest ever. Yesterday’s ACTOR (see below) had an average score of 3.6 according to WordleBot, while today’s MEANT is at 3.5. Neither should have caused you any major problems.
MEANT certainly won’t have challenged you unduly if you began your game with either CRANE or SLATE. These are two of the best Wordle starting words, and also two of the most popular – between them they accounted for 5% of all opening words played today. SLATE, which is WordleBot’s favorite starting word, reduced the answers list to eight, while CRANE – the ‘bot’s second top pick – left only two of them. Other successes included SLANT (5) and LEAST (4).
My choice, STARE, left 12 options, which should have been a good start from which to solve the puzzle in three guesses. And indeed I did do that – but only thanks to a big slice of luck.
My second guess was TEACH, which WordleBot said “wasn’t my favorite”. Fair enough – but I thought that it made sense. After all, some of the possible answers on my list included HEATH, DEATH, EXACT and ENACT, along with TEACH itself (plus MEATY and EXALT), so I figured it would point the way to the inclusion of the H or C that featured in five of those words. Unfortunately, I’d missed far too many options: LEAPT, MEANT, LEANT, DEALT and BEAUT, none of which had an H or C.
Instead, WordleBot said, I should have played LUNCH – which also added L and N into the mix. It couldn’t have been the answer, but would have reduced those 12 options to a single one. TEACH, in contrast, uncovered no more letters and still left six possible answers.
At this point I took another look at the board and realized that I’d missed quite a few possibilities. After a bit more investigation, I found five of the six remaining answers, missing BEAUT. And then I got lucky. I decided that MEANT would be a good word to play next, because even if wrong it would point the way to the answer. There was a slight chance that it might leave me a 50/50 between DEALT and LEAPT, but that was a reasonable risk.
As it happened, I instead picked the answer on that third guess. I can’t say that I played today’s Wordle particularly well, so the fact that I still scored a 3/6 goes to show that it really was an easy one.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #875)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #875) was… ACTOR.
I made a bit of a mess of this Wordle, turning it into a game of chase-the-yellow-letters-around-the-board for a couple of guesses before eventually solving it on the fourth attempt.
Others will almost certainly not have found it so frustrating, given that WordleBot says people are solving it in an average of 3.6 guesses. That’s not quite as low as yesterday’s LEASH (see below), which had a 3.2 average, but still well below the norm for Wordle, which is around 4.0.
There are no real complications to it, so that lowish average should not be a surprise. All five letters are common, although C sits just outside the top 10 most overall, and is not very often found in position #2 in an answer. But as a word, it’s about as common as they get.
Some of the best Wordle starting words made it easier still: CRATE left only one remaining answer, while TRACE left two and CARTE three. Plenty of people will have scored a 2/6 today.
I was not one of them. STARE gave me three yellows and cut the options to 17, which was pretty good. But the next two guesses were a little unlucky, with PARTY cutting the number to five and then TRIAL – which was one of those five – narrowing it down to a single option. That was ACTOR and I finally played it next for a 4/6 score.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
