Today’s Wordle answer (game #886)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #886) is… PIXEL.
At heart, Wordle is a game of luck. Yes, skill comes into it too, but you can play perfectly and get a below-par score, or randomly lob words at the board and get a 2/6. Over the course of many games that luck will even out, so your overall average is probably the best indicator of your Wordling ability (mine is 3.63 over 687 games, for what it’s worth). But your score for an individual game often says nothing beyond how lucky you were.
That’s the case with my game today, at least – I scored a 3/6, on a day when the Wordle word was a pretty tough one that has an average of 4.2, according to WordleBot. And I achieved that good score purely because I got lucky.
PIXEL owes its difficulty to the X sitting right in the middle of the word. X is the third least common letter in the game, ahead of only Q and J, and appears in a mere 37 out of Wordle’s original 2,309 answers. At least I think that must be the problem, because the other four letters are all common.
Another factor could have been the performance of the best Wordle starting words; very few helped much, with most returning more than 100 possible answers. Only PLATE and PLANE (each of which left four solutions) bucked that trend.
My pick, STARE, left 249 possibles, so a score of 3/6 seemed an impossible dream. Things improved slightly with my second guess – BLEND gave me a yellow L to add to the E, but the latter stayed stubbornly yellow too and I still had 17 answers to choose from.
I didn’t list all 17, but came up with a half dozen: HOVEL, HELLO, CELLO, EXCEL, HELIX and PIXEL. I wasn’t trying to be comprehensive, but I’m still annoyed I didn’t spot the likes of JEWEL, VOWEL, LEVEL and JELLY – although I’m less bothered by my failure to come up with JULEP or KUGEL.
Anyway, I didn’t think I’d solve the Wordle at this stage of proceedings, so I just wanted a word to point me in the right direction. Several of my answers contained an X, so I decided to go for one of those.
Now, as it happens, I had my phone beside me on the desk. And my phone is a Google Pixel 8 (which I can highly recommend, there are some great Google Pixel Black Friday deals right now if you’re interested). So, for want of a better option, I played PIXEL because it was in my mind and might help.
A 17-to-1 shot is not one that often comes off, but today fortune smiled upon me and all five letters turned green. And to round things off, I beat WordleBot (which could only score a 4/6). I’ll take that.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #885)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #885) was… PIANO.
Some Wordles are ‘easy’ because they genuinely are easy, with no particular complications to trip people up. Others have a low average score, as reported by WordleBot, because some of the best Wordle starting words gave a particular set of people an advantage.
And then there are the games that are both of those things, of which today’s is a prime example. For starters, anyone who began today’s game by playing AUDIO – the second most popular of all starting words, behind ADIEU – will have had a massive advantage, because it cut the number of remaining answers to a single option.
Given that 5% of players started with AUDIO today, 5% will presumably have scored a 2/6. And that’s part of the reason why it has an overall average of 3.3. The other part, obviously, is that PIANO is fundamentally an easy Wordle. It contains three vowels, one very common consonant, a very common starting letter and is a very common word. There’s nothing to worry about here.
My own game started with a single green A, which left 43 possible solutions. But I need not have worried, because my second guess, CLING, cut that to only one.
CLING is a great second word to use in these kind of situations. It contains four common consonants, including two (L and N) that I think of as among the best ‘linking letters’, by which I mean that they pair nicely with a select group of other letters. If you get a yellow or green L, for instance, you know that it will often follow a C, B, F, G or P, but that many others letters don’t work with it. This helps to identify the pattern that the answer takes.
As it happens, the L wasn’t included but the N and I were. The only ways I could arrange my letters now were I-AN-, -IAN- and –ANI, and I quickly realized that neither the first or last of those pointed towards any answers. The middle one, however, gave me PIANO, and I played that next for a 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
