Today’s Wordle answer (game #887)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #887) is… QUEEN.
For today’s column, I would like to demonstrate that I CAN SOMETIMES BE REALLY STUPID. QUEEN is a fairly tough puzzle, sure, but even so I made a really silly mistake that cost me a guess.
I say it’s a fairly tough puzzle, but WordleBot, the NYT’s AI helper tool, says it has an average score of 3.8. That’s below the 4.0 mark that I tend to think of as the dividing line between easier and harder. That’s a little surprising, because QUEEN should trouble some people, on account of it having both an uncommon letter (Q) and a repeated E.
Then again, E is the most common letter to be repeated, and maybe the Q was fresh in people’s mind from QUEUE on Sunday.
Anyway, it should have been hard, despite what WordleBot says, and I made it harder for myself.
I started, as always, with STARE – one of the best Wordle starting words but one that today left a huge pool of possible answers (249 of them). Not that many others were better – a few options left around 80 possible answers, but most were over 100.
I followed up with BLEND and that worked wonderfully well, turning the E green and giving me a yellow N too. Remarkably, that cut the answers list to only two: ENEMY and QUEEN.
And then I had a brain malfunction. I really struggled to come up with words that fit, and didn’t find either ENEMY or QUEEN. What I did find was NIECE – which would have been fine, but for the fact that the E was already ruled out from appearing in the final spot.
Somehow, I missed this.
As WordleBot told me rather curtly afterwards, “This guess didn’t eliminate any of the remaining words.” It then awarded me zero for skill, which was probably fair.
For the fourth guess, then, I still faced the same two choices, neither of which I’d yet identified. After a further scan of the board – helped by the fact that I now knew the N wasn’t at the start of the word, so it’s not like NIECE didn’t teach me anything – I finally spotted QUEEN and played that next for a 4/6.
Even then, the fact that I didn’t find ENEMY at all meant that I could have ended up with a 5/6, if I’d got that fourth guess wrong. Not my finest hour, then.

L is a really common letter to find at the end of a Wordle. There are 155 games that finish with an L, and it ranks as the fifth most likely letter there.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #886)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #886) was… PIXEL.
At heart, Wordle is a game of luck. Yes, skill comes into it too, but you can play perfectly and get a below-par score, or randomly lob words at the board and get a 2/6. Over the course of many games that luck will even out, so your overall average is probably the best indicator of your Wordling ability (mine is 3.63 over 687 games, for what it’s worth). But your score for an individual game often says nothing beyond how lucky you were.
That’s the case with my game today, at least – I scored a 3/6, on a day when the Wordle word was a pretty tough one that has an average of 4.2, according to WordleBot. And I achieved that good score purely because I got lucky.
PIXEL owes its difficulty to the X sitting right in the middle of the word. X is the third least common letter in the game, ahead of only Q and J, and appears in a mere 37 out of Wordle’s original 2,309 answers. At least I think that must be the problem, because the other four letters are all common.
Another factor could have been the performance of the best Wordle starting words; very few helped much, with most returning more than 100 possible answers. Only PLATE and PLANE (each of which left four solutions) bucked that trend.
My pick, STARE, left 249 possibles, so a score of 3/6 seemed an impossible dream. Things improved slightly with my second guess – BLEND gave me a yellow L to add to the E, but the latter stayed stubbornly yellow too and I still had 17 answers to choose from.
I didn’t list all 17, but came up with a half dozen: HOVEL, HELLO, CELLO, EXCEL, HELIX and PIXEL. I wasn’t trying to be comprehensive, but I’m still annoyed I didn’t spot the likes of JEWEL, VOWEL, LEVEL and JELLY – although I’m less bothered by my failure to come up with JULEP or KUGEL.
Anyway, I didn’t think I’d solve the Wordle at this stage of proceedings, so I just wanted a word to point me in the right direction. Several of my answers contained an X, so I decided to go for one of those.
Now, as it happens, I had my phone beside me on the desk. And my phone is a Google Pixel 8 (which I can highly recommend, there are some great Google Pixel Black Friday deals right now if you’re interested). So, for want of a better option, I played PIXEL because it was in my mind and might help.
A 17-to-1 shot is not one that often comes off, but today fortune smiled upon me and all five letters turned green. And to round things off, I beat WordleBot (which could only score a 4/6). I’ll take that.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
