Wordle hints (game #893) – clue #1 – Vowels
How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?
• Wordle today has vowels in two places*.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
Wordle hints (game #893) – clue #2 – first letter
What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?
• The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is S.
S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. In fact, it’s almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.
Wordle hints (game #893) – clue #3 – repeated letters
Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?
• There are repeated letters in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
Wordle hints (game #893) – clue #4 – ending letter
What letter does today’s Wordle end with?
• The last letter in today’s Wordle is I.
I is a really unlikely letter to end a Wordle answer. Only 11 of the game’s 2,309 original solutions finish with one, making it just the 19th most common in this position.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #893)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #893) is… SUSHI.
I love sushi. This almost certainly had no bearing on my game today, and definitely had none on yours, but it’s true all the same. I also love SUSHI as a Wordle answer. It’s fairly challenging, but not due to some stupid reason such as there being another 10 answers that have a similar letter-format (I’m looking at you, HOUND) or due to being a word that hardly anyone would know (BORAX!). No, the problems are the repeated S and the fact that it ends in an I.
WordleBot says it has an average score of 4.1 – which makes it a lot tougher than yesterday’s SCOPE (4.1, see below) but not quite as tricky as Monday’s TAWNY (4.2). The repeated S is probably less of a problem than the I at the end. S is repeated in 49 of Wordle’s original 2,309 answers (about 2%), whereas I only ends 11 (less than 0.5%). If you’re anything like me, you won’t even have considered the fact that it might finish the answer.
It’s not an answer that many of the best Wordle starting words helped greatly with. SAINT, which left 18 possible solutions, was one of the few that cut down the options to below 20, whereas SLATE left 69 and my choice, STARE, left 81.
With a green S on the board, I wanted a second guess that contained several of the letters that regularly follow it. PYLON fit the bill nicely once again, because SP— gave me the likes of SPICY, SL— led to SLINK and SN— to SNIFF. I was a little unlucky here, because PYLON didn’t give me any new letters. However, by ruling out those five it did cut the options list to nine.
Embarrassingly, I only found one, SHUCK. According to WordleBot, I could also have played SQUID, SQUIB, SWISH, SKIFF, SCUFF, SHUSH and SMUSH (and SUSHI, of course). This is a poor effort on my part, and one which I have no excuse for.
Anyway, I played SHUCK next and though it wasn’t correct, it did finally point the way to the answer. SUSHI was the only remaining possibility – once I’d realized that I could put an I at the end of the word – so I played that next for a 4/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #892)
In a different time zone where it’s still Tuesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #892, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was S.
S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. In fact, it’s almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was E.
E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #892)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #892) was… SCOPE.
This is a much easier Wordle than yesterday’s (see below), but not without its problems. WordleBot says it has an average score of 3.7 – a full half a guess lower than TAWNY – but its complications are of an entirely different nature.
Namely: lots of alternative words that have a similar format. There are many, many words that stare with an S and end in an E; after all, those two letters are respectively the most common at the start and end of an answer. And many of the S—-E words have an O in the middle – for instance SCORE, SPORE, SNORE, SCONE, SHONE, SMOKE, SPOKE and so on.
How easily you found your way to the solution, assuming you did, will therefore have depended greatly on which of the best Wordle starting words you began with. And if you didn’t begin with one at all, well then you’re making life hard for yourself (but also possibly injecting a little welcome jeopardy into the game).
The best words to play today, out of the top 20 options, were CLONE (which left two answers) and CRONE (which left one). Lots of others were in the 10-20 range, including CRANE (11), TRACE (18) and LANCE (21).
My pick was STARE, as always, and it was just behind the most successful, leaving 32 options. I needed a bit of luck to get home in three guesses from there, plus a bit of planning.
For the planning aspect, I listed all the words I could think of – I came up with about 25 – then looked for a word that would narrow down those options. I wanted the I and O in there, as the two most common remaining vowels. L, N and C all made sense too, because all follow S in words such as SCOPE, SNIPE and SLIME. Could I make a word from them? Yes, I could make the word COLIN. Is that a word? I thought it was a name? But Wordle accepted it, so I played it.
WordleBot wasn’t entirely sure it liked it, but it did the trick – COLIN gave me yellow C and O, and cut the answers list to one. SCOPE was the only word I could play, so I did that next for a satisfactory 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
