Wordle clues (game #602) – hint #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has two vowels*.

Getting two vowels in a Wordle answer is a lot more likely than getting one; there are 1,336 Wordle solutions containing two vowels, but only 732 that have one.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle clues (game #602) – hint #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is D.

D is the ninth most common starting letter in the game, so maybe slightly less likely than you might expect.

That said, we had one less than a week ago, with DANCE (game #596).

Wordle clues (game #602) – hint #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle clues (game #602) – hint #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is G.

G is not a common letter to end a Wordle answer – in fact only 41 of Wordle’s 2,309 games finish with one.

Wordle clues (game #602) – hint #5 – last chance

The answer to today’s Wordle, game #602, is… DEBUG.

Oh dear! If you thought yesterday’s Wordle, HEADY, was on the more obscure side then you won’t like this. In fact, the Word And Phrase Info (opens in new tab) website says it ranks 34,499th among all English words. That’s seriously low down the list.

What’s more, it ends with a G. This is quite uncommon too, with just 41 Wordle answers having that format. Oh, and a B in the middle is almost as unlikely (56 answers). Even the U is the least common of the vowels.

This game was stacked against you from the start, then, and WordleBot says it has an average score of 4.3. And if that’s not as high as you might expect, it’s probably only because there aren’t that many other options to choose from.

Your choice of the best Wordle starting words won’t have helped much, either. The likes of SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and TRACE all left several hundred answers, as did my own favorite, STARE (249). DEALT would have been a good one today: just 14 remaining answers after playing that.

Obviously I wasn’t going to guess it in 2/6 today, so I played BLEND next. WordleBot prefers LINED in this scenario, but I like using lots of consonants early, as vowels are easier to place later.

Well, today I got very lucky with that approach. BLEND gave me a yellow B and yellow D to go with the (still yellow) E. I thought I might have a few possibilities left to me, but could only come up with three: DEBUG, DEFIB and DEMOB.

I was by no means sure that any were actual answers, but DEBUG seemed the most likely, so I played that and scored my 3/6. WordleBot told me after the game that my hunch was right: neither DEFIB or DEMOB were answers, and in fact my second guess had narrowed it down to just one remaining solution. Phew!

Wordle yesterday (game #601) – clues

In a different time zone where it’s still Friday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #602 too.

  • Wordle yesterday had two vowels.
  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was H.
  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
  • Yesterday’s Wordle means rash or giddy.

The answer to yesterday’s Wordle, game #601, is… HEADY.

So, what do we think of this one then? It’s definitely not the most common word – in fact, the very useful Word And Phrase Info (opens in new tab) website says it ranks 11,487th among all English words, which is way higher than Thursday’s STAGE (830).

It also has a much less common starting letter; H doesn’t occur that often at the front of a Wordle answer, with just 69 games beginning with it. The E, A and D are common, obviously, and Y is the second most likely letter to end an answer – so it’s only really the H that might have been hard to find.

Some of the best Wordle starting words will have helped greatly here. WordleBot’s favorite, SLATE, was pretty good – that left just 12 remaining answers. TRACE and CRATE (both 9) were even better.

My own choice, STARE, narrowed it down to 10 options, although I didn’t identify all of them. I came up with LEAFY, LEAKY, BEADY, MEALY, HEAVY, HEADY, BEACH and PEACH – but missed LEACH and EMAIL.

With so many Y-ending words among my choices, I knew I’d go down that route. I also remembered that BEADY had already been an answer, so discounted that. And I figured that MEALY might not be one either. HEAVY definitely seemed like a likely choice, so I went with that while knowing that it might well leave me with a 50/50 or worse depending on what happened.

Well, I got lucky – though it wasn’t HEAVY, all but the V turned green, so HEADY was just a guess away for a pleasing 3/6.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
