Wordle clues (game #605) – hint #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has two vowels*.

Getting two vowels in a Wordle answer is a lot more likely than getting one; there are 1,336 Wordle solutions containing two vowels, but only 732 that have one.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle clues (game #605) – hint #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is S.

S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. In fact, it’s almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.

Wordle clues (game #605) – hint #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle clues (game #605) – hint #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is D.

D is a fairly common letter to end a Wordle answer: it’s the eighth most likely to be in that position in a solution.

Wordle clues (game #605) – hint #5 – last chance

Wordle today (game #605) – the answer

The answer to today’s Wordle, game #605, is… SOUND.

This was a frustrating game for me, because I could easily have solved it in 2/6 and possibly should have got it in 3/6. But that’s how it goes sometimes.

SOUND is one of those words that you think must have been an answer before, but apparently not. It doesn’t present any particular difficulties, with five common letters in reasonably common places within the word. The NYT’s WordleBot tool says people are solving it in 3.6 guesses, and that sounds about right to me.

A look at Twitter backs that up to an extent. Some people are losing their streaks, probably because there are multiple words that end -OUND. For instance, you could also have POUND, MOUND, ROUND, FOUND, HOUND, WOUND or BOUND. That’s not a problem if you already used the S in your start word, but if you didn’t do that then you face this scenario:

It’s a particular problem in Wordle hard mode, which I don’t currently play in (though I have dabbled).

Anyway, my start word, STARE, gave me just a single green S and left me with 81 possible answers. The likes of SLATE (69) and CRANE (67) were a little better, but SLANT (16) was the one to go for today.

I didn’t know there were 81 answers left, because WordleBot only tells you that after the game. But I could see there were too many for me to score a 2/6. Or were there? My first thought for my second guess was to play two more vowels plus a couple of common consonants. SPOIL and SOUND both fit the bit. And I think I was more likely to play SOUND.

As it happens, though, I instead decided to forget about scoring a 2/6 and instead narrowed it down with PYLON. This had the advantage of getting an extra consonant in there, and it did the trick – I was left with just two possible answers.

These were SONIC and, again, SOUND. So for the second guess in a row I could have played it and… didn’t. Yes, I went with SONIC instead. Maybe I should have looked at the list of the past Wordle answers, because doing so would have confirmed that SONIC was an answer in December 2021, and I’d have scored a 3/6.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but it’s no use to me now. I played SOUND on the next guess instead and scored a slightly frustrating 4/6.

How did you do today? Send me an email and let me know.

Wordle yesterday (game #604) – clues

In a different time zone where it’s still Monday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #604 too.

  • Wordle yesterday had three vowels.
  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was U.
  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was E.
  • Yesterday’s Wordle is a regular way of doing something.

Wordle yesterday (game #604) – the answer

The answer to yesterday’s Wordle, game #604, was… USAGE.

With a WordleBot score of 3.7, yesterday’s Wordle answer was supposedly on the easier side of things. However, I wouldn’t call it easy as such.

The letters are mostly quite common, but not necessarily common in the places where they are found here.

Well, A and E are – they’re the most likely letters to be used in the middle and end of a Wordle answer respectively. But U doesn’t start too many answers (it ranks 20th in this regard) and S is only 17th when used in the second position. In fact, that’s arguably the biggest problem here – S is incredibly common at the start of a word (365 games) and pretty common in position #4 (171 games), but there are only 16 Wordle solutions where S is second.

All that said, the lack of viable options will have kept many scores down to 3, 4 or 5 today – I don’t see too many people losing their streaks. SLATE left six possible answers, according to WordleBot, while my choice of STARE left seven. Most of the other popular ones were higher than that without being in the hundreds, for instance CRANE left 48, SLANT 20 and TRACE 38.

With a green A and E, and a yellow S, I could see there weren’t many options for my second guess. WordleBot says there were seven, and I came up with five: CHASE, PHASE, LEASE, CEASE and USAGE. I didn’t spot ABASE or BLASE – although I doubt the latter is a genuine Wordle answer anyway, given that the lack of accent would definitely confuse people.

Four of my five words ended –ASE, so that seemed the right approach. Two had -EASE, and two -HASE. Guessing one of those would presumably get me a 2/6 or 3/6, with a slight chance of a 4/6, so that seemed the right approach.

I chose LEASE, and that did the trick – the S stayed yellow, pretty much confirming the answer as USAGE. As an aside, WordleBot didn’t like it much, describing it as lucky. Well, it was – but equally, it wasn’t that lucky, because given that I’d not spotted BLASE (and don’t think it is an answer), I’d still have had a 50/50 even if the S had turned green. I couldn’t realistically have got worse than a 4/6 today, so chancing my luck made sense!

Anyway, USAGE duly solved the puzzle on the next go and gave me another 3/6.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
