Wordle clues (game #618) – hint #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has two vowels*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle clues (game #618) – hint #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is W.

W is a fairly average letter when it comes to starting an answer. There are 82 solutions that begin with a W, with means that it ranks 13th – so right in the middle of the alphabet.

Wordle clues (game #618) – hint #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle clues (game #618) – hint #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is E.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Wordle clues (game #618) – hint #5 – last chance

Wordle today (game #618) – the answer

The answer to today’s Wordle, game #618, is… WORSE.

Oh dear. I’ve been playing Wordle for 420 games now, as well as completing the first 219 that I missed via one of the Wordle archives. And in that time I don’t think I’ve ever made quite such a stupid mistake as I did today. It didn’t cost me that much – I still scored a 4/6 – but it should definitely have been a 3/6. Just goes to show that you need to concentrate at all times when playing Wordle.

The annoying thing is that this was a reasonably tough answer that I should have solved in way below the average of 4.2 that WordleBot is reporting for it. It’s not a particularly difficult word in some ways – all of the letters bar W are very common – but there are quite a few similar options that have the same letters, and I allowed for that in my guesses.

My choice of the best Wordle starting words, STARE, also helped greatly, giving me yellow S and R, and green E, and leaving me with just 11 possible answers for my second guess. That was much more successful than most start words today; SLATE left 31 possible answers, CRANE 46 and TRACE 42, for instance.

I came up with seven of those 11 possibles myself: VERSE, CURSE, NURSE, PURSE, WORSE, HORSE and PROSE. I missed REUSE, ROUSE, RINSE and FRISE – though I did also find GORSE, which WordleBot didn’t consider an option.

With so many similar words to pick from, I decided to narrow things down with a word that couldn’t be the answer but which would eliminate most of the others. I chose POUCH, which would have almost guaranteed a 3/6 for me.

And it worked. WordleBot awarded me 97/99 for skill, and informed me (after the game) that I now had just one possible answer remaining: WORSE.

Unfortunately, I screwed up. For some reason I missed the fact that H had just been ruled out, and played HORSE rather than WORSE. Whoops!

I realized my mistake on the next guess and solved today’s Wordle in 4/6. But it really should have been better.

How did you do today? Send me an email and let me know.

Wordle yesterday (game #617) – clues

In a different time zone where it’s still Sunday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #617, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had one vowel.
  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was S.
  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was P.
  • Yesterday’s Wordle is a sweet substance.

Wordle yesterday (game #617) – the answer

The answer to yesterday’s Wordle, game #617, was… SYRUP.

I’m a little surprised this one only has an average score of 3.8, given it has the potential to be a little tricky. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not at the same difficulty level as the likes of FIFTY, ARBOR and RIPER, but I’d still have expected it to sit a little above 4.

S is a very common starting letter, admittedly – in fact it’s the most likely letter to find at the beginning of a Wordle answer – but Y is much more commonly found at the end than in position #2 as it is here, and P is a fairly uncommon ending letter. U is the least common of the five standard vowels, too.

Still, it’s far from an obscure word, and depending on your choice of the best Wordle starting words you have had relatively few choices to pick from. My own pick – STARE – was the one to go for today, as it left just 10 remaining answers. WordleBot’s favorites were much less useful: SLATE (69), CRANE (103), SLANT (96) and TRACE (77) were all pretty high, with only CARTE (31) narrowing things down much.

I say that I had 10 remaining answers, but really it was fewer than that, because WordleBot also includes solutions that have already appeared in the game. I didn’t even need to look at the list of past Wordle answers to recall that SCOUR, SHRUB and SHRUG had all featured in previous games. My list had just six on it: SYRUP, SCRIP, SPRIG, SURLY, SCRUM and SCRUB. WordleBot also suggested SCROD, but I doubt that’s really an answer.

SCRUB was my obvious choice for a second guess. It was one of the more likely words to actually be an answer and even if it was wrong, it would point the way to the actual solution either way and therefore guarantee me a 3/6. Why? Well if the first four letters turned green, but not the B, it would have to be SCRUM. If the first three were green, it would be SCRIP. And so on.

As it happens, I received a green R and U to go with my S, which left me with just SYRUP as a possible answer. I played that next go and duly scored my 3/6.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
