Wordle’s tough run continues today, with yet another puzzle that may cause you some problems. WordleBot says it has an average score of 4.4 and some Wordle clues may well be needed.

M is a middling letter when it comes to starting a word. It sits 10th in the rankings, with 107 occurrences in the 2,309 answers.

• There is one repeated letter in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

• The last letter in today’s Wordle is E.
E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Wordle today (game #620) – the answer
The answer to today’s Wordle, game #620, is… MOOSE.
It feels like an age since we’ve had an easy Wordle, and in relative terms it is. Only one puzzle in the past nine days has dipped below an average score of 4, according to WordleBot, and that was SYRUP, hardly a cakewalk itself.
Today’s is much harder still: MOOSE is currently being solved in an average of 4.4 guesses, which places it as a difficult one even among recent games.
The double-O is the biggest complication. On the one hand it’s a relatively common occurrence – 58 games have an OO in them, making it the second most likely letter to be doubled-up in this way. But at the same time, 58 games out of 2,309 answers is still only 2.5%. Or, to put it another way, you’d only expect to get one every 40 games or so. As it happens, we’ve not had one since FLOOR in October 2022, about 140 games ago, so we were well overdue.
Some of the best Wordle starting words were helpful today, but not many. SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, left 31 possible answers and my own pick, STARE, resulted in just 24. But the likes of CRANE (126), SLANT (108) and TRACE (127) were all much higher.
I didn’t find all 24 options, but then I didn’t try; I just rattled off a list of about a dozen or so in order to guide me towards a good second guess. Most of the words I came up with featured an ending of —SE, with either an O or I before that. NOISE therefore seemed like a good guess.
WordleBot didn’t agree much, awarding me just 75 for skill and stating that CLOUD would have been better. That’s fair enough – NOISE left me with 10 possible solutions, but CLOUD would have reduced that to just four. But that said, CLOUD couldn’t have been an answer, whereas NOISE could.
Either way, I still had work to do. I correctly identified seven of the 10 options: MOOSE, LOOSE, MOUSE, LOUSE, DOUSE, HOUSE and POSSE. I missed COPSE and DOWSE, and dismissed GOOSE as it had been an answer before (game #357, June 2022).
At this point I was a little worried that I might run out of options without some luck, so decided to narrow things down with GHOUL. This would confirm whether it was an OUSE or OOSE word, as well as helping me choose between the likes of HOUSE and LOUSE. That did the trick: with the second O turning green, but the L staying gray, I knew it had to be MOOSE and solved today’s Wordle in 4/6.

Wordle yesterday (game #619) – clues

Wordle yesterday (game #619) – the answer
The answer to yesterday’s Wordle, game #619, was… POLKA.
Sometimes it just isn’t your day. This Wordle answer has a slightly above average score of 4.1, according to WordleBot, so I’m annoyed that I only managed to grab a 5/6 myself.
Ultimately I was thrown by the position of the A, which isn’t that unusual at the end of an answer, but is still much more common in every other spot. And yes, I did end up trying it everywhere else before I gave up and put it in position #5. But the K is also a relatively uncommon letter where it sits here and the word itself is not one that readily springs to mind.
My choice of the best Wordle starting words, STARE, was not useful at all – it left me with a massive 187 possible answers. SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite was better, without really being that helpful still – it left 73 possibles. Most of the other top picks were above 100.
Many games will therefore have got off to a poor start, making that second guess more important than it is on some days.
WordleBot suggested after the game that I should have chosen CANAL next, but I’d generally never play a word with a repeated letter so early. Instead, I went with DAILY – which WordleBot liked. However, it also told me it was an unlucky guess on this occasion, and that it still left me with 20 possible solutions. Gulp.
I really needed to find out where that A went, and now the L too. But both appear frequently in lots of spots, so this was tough. I put the A at the start next, and included an O in my search for a second vowel. Again, I was unlucky – those letters just would not turn green, and I now had a third yellow to locate.
At this point, I started worrying slightly. Playing LOCAL was my attempt to guarantee some greens. Including the L twice would mean I would definitely know where both the L and A were located by my next guess, because I’d have tried them both in every other place by then. And it worked. The O turned turned green and the L and A stayed yellow, meaning that the format had to be -OL-A.
What word could that be? Only one, as it turns out, and I finally found POLKA on the fifth guess.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
