Wordle today is back to being relatively easy, although I somehow contrived to score just a 5/6 on it. Still, WordleBot says people are solving it in an average of 3.8 guesses, so it shouldn’t prove too tricky for most people.

That said, it’s another of those games where many of the best Wordle starting words won’t have helped that much – although I recommend you use one anyway.

I’m a Wordle addict who’s been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Wordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Read on for my Wordle clues and hints to game #598 and bookmark this page so you can easily return tomorrow.

SPOILER WARNING: Information about Wordle today and Wordle yesterday are below, so don’t read on if you don’t want to know the answers.

Wordle today (game #598) – hint #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has two vowels*.

Getting two vowels in a Wordle answer is a lot more likely than getting one; there are 1,336 Wordle solutions containing two vowels, but only 732 that have one.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle today (game #598) – hint #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is A.

A is a reasonably common starting letter in Wordle: 140 games begin with this letter. It ranks 6th among starting letters, behind S, C, B, T and P.

Wordle today (game #598) – hint #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There is one repeated letter in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle today (game #598) – hint #4 – final clue

Wordle today (game #598) – the answer

The answer to today’s Wordle, game #598, is… APPLE.

For the second game in a row I had something of a disaster, scoring only a 5/6 on a day when WordleBot says the average was just 3.8. But as with yesterday’s NINTH, I’m putting quite a lot of that down to bad luck. WordleBot seems to agree: it awarded me 97/99 for skill, but just 32/99 for luck.

As a word, APPLE should be fairly straightforward given that all the letters are common ones, but the repeated P does complicate it. Only 11 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers contain a double-P, so it’s a pretty uncommon occurrence and one that you may well have not planned for. I certainly didn’t!

My choice of the best Wordle starting words was STARE once again, and this time it gave me a green E and a yellow A. WordleBot says this left me with 45 possible answers, which isn’t too bad. But others were better, for instance SLATE (14) and PLATE (4).

With only a couple of vowels to go on, I decided to play some more consonants. I figured there’d be too many possible solutions left to have any real chance of a 2/6, so I played BLIND. This definitely couldn’t be the answer, but it used four common consonants and another vowel.

WordleBot loved this; it would have played ALIGN, but the principle was the same. However, it wasn’t hugely lucky and still left me with seven possible answers.

At this stage I did try to find them all and came up with AMPLE, EAGLE, MAPLE, HALVE, VALVE and VALUE. The one I missed? You guessed it: APPLE.

With those answers in mind, VALUE seemed the best guess, as it would rule in/out most of the remaining answers either way. I potentially faced a 50/50 with EAGLE and MAPLE, but that was the worst-case scenario.

Only it wasn’t. VALUE still left me with yellow L and yellow A, and I thought guaranteed that the answer was AMPLE – but I still hadn’t spotted that APPLE also fitted. When I played AMPLE all but the second letter turned green and I finally realized my mistake.

So, a poor 5/6 for me today – hopefully you fared better.

Wordle yesterday (game #597) – hints

In a different time zone where it’s still Monday? Don’t worry – I can give you some hints for Wordle #597 too.

  • Wordle yesterday had one vowel.
  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was N.
  • There was one repeated letter in yesterday’s Wordle.
  • Yesterday’s Wordle is a fraction.

Wordle yesterday (game #597) – the answer

The answer to yesterday’s Wordle, game #597, was… NINTH.

Every so often, a game just doesn’t go your way. I don’t think I played this Wordle particularly poorly, but I still contrived to score a 6/6 with it – only my 17th of those in 399 games. Despite that, WordleBot awarded me a 90 skill score, against a global average of 84. So, what went wrong? Well, my luck score of 33 tells that story.

Things started badly. My choice of the best Wordle starting words was STARE, but it served up just a single yellow T and (according to WordleBot) left me with 119 possible answers. Not that many others would have been that much better. SLATE left 45, CRANE 80 and CRATE 53. SLANT was a bit better (34) but of the popular choices only SAINT (14) was close to single figures.

My second guess of CLOUT admittedly wasn’t the best, but WordleBot still awarded it 88 for skill. However, it failed to uncover any further letters and still left me with 19 possible answers. A luck score of just 8/99 here is further evidence for the gods being against me.

At this point, I thought I’d better try to identify some of the possible answers and came up with 13 of them: THINK, THING, FIFTY, TINNY, TIZZY, WITTY, KITTY, DITTY, BITTY, WIDTH, FIFTH, TIMID and PITHY.

The ones I’d missed, according to WordleBot, were THIGH, NIFTY, MINTY, DITZY, TYING and NINTH. That last one would come back to haunt me.

Given how many answers ended with a Y, I definitely wanted to include one in my third guess. Putting an I in there made sense too, as did an H. PITHY therefore seemed like a good choice to narrow it down, but WordleBot didn’t like it much, proclaiming “This guess wasn’t my favorite.” Great, thanks for that helpful feedback!

I’m not entirely sure why it didn’t like it, as it successfully reduced the possible options to just three: WIDTH, FIFTH and NINTH. But somehow I still hadn’t spotted NINTH as a word that fit – I have no excuse beyond stupidity.

Faced with what I thought was a 50/50, I chose WIDTH… and got it wrong. No matter, I thought, let’s play FIFTH instead. When that also proved to be incorrect I endured a minute of panic before realizing that fortunately NINTH was the only word that still fit and scoring my 6/6.

Not my finest hour, then, but further proof that this game should never be underestimated.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
