Wordle today (game #600) – hint #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has two vowels*.

Getting two vowels in a Wordle answer is a lot more likely than getting one; there are 1,336 Wordle solutions containing two vowels, but only 732 that have one.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle today (game #600) – hint #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is S.

S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. In fact, it’s almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.

Wordle today (game #600) – hint #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle today (game #600) – hint #4 – final clue

The answer to today’s Wordle, game #600, is… STAGE.

OK, so first things first: this is one of those too-many answer games where luck will play a huge part in what score people got. And in some cases, that will have led to lost streaks…

The thing is, WordleBot says people are solving this in an average of 4 guesses – which is standard for the game. But I’d be fairly sure we’ll have a lot of 2/6s, loads of 3/6s, and plenty of 5/6s and worse.

As a word, it’s straightforward enough: everyone uses ‘STAGE’ at some, er, stage. And the letters are all pretty common too. G is the only outlier, ranking 17th overall and 12th when used in position #4. But S, T, A and E are all super-frequent visitors to a Wordle answer.

The problem is that STAGE is by no means the only word that fits that letter pattern. If, like me, you started with STARE today you’ll have had five possible solutions left: STALE, STATE, STAKE, STAVE and STAGE. Get lucky and you’ll have walked away with a 2/6, but on the flip side a 6/6 could have been on the cards.

And not all of the best Wordle starting words will have helped that much. WordleBot’s favorite, SLATE, left 4, but its second choice of CRANE resulted in 48 remaining solutions. People starting with that will probably have needed to first find the STA-E bit, and then find that final letter. And that could have left to a failure overall.

I had no such problems, because I did start with STARE and faced nothing worse than a 6/6. Even that was never on the cards, because I remembered that STALE was an answer back in November (game #505), so a 5/6 was my maximum.

I initially tried to narrow down the options by playing a ‘throwaway’ word that couldn’t be right but would guarantee a 3/6, but it just wasn’t possible. I needed a word containing G, K, V and potentially T, and there are none as far as I know. The best I could do was words that contained two of those four letters – for instance GRATE would have ruled in/out STAGE and STATE, leaving me with either a definite 3/6 or a possible 4/6 at worst.

Given that 5/6 was only slightly worse than that, I figured I’d instead go all in on the 2/6 and played STATE. Although it has a repeated T it seemed likely just because T is such a common letter. STAGE was the next most likely and gave me my 3/6.

Wordle yesterday (game #599) – hints

In a different time zone where it’s still Wednesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some hints for Wordle #599 too.

  • Wordle yesterday had two vowels.
  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was F.
  • There was one repeated letter in yesterday’s Wordle.
  • Yesterday’s Wordle means to move randomly.

Wordle yesterday (game #599) – the answer

The answer to yesterday’s Wordle, game #599, was… FLAIL.

This one could be a toughie! That’s mainly due to the repeated L, which is a lot less common than you might imagine. Or rather, it’s uncommon when the two Ls don’t sit together. There are 71 Wordle solutions containing two Ls, but in 59 of them you get an LL – think SKILL or BULLY. That leaves just 12 in which the two Ls are separated and FLAIL is one of them.

You could also argue that it’s not the most commonly used word, so you might not have thought of it. It’s a good one, though; I’m making a resolution to use it more often from now on.

As it happens, I fared much better here than I did in my previous two games. I’ve decided that my choice of the best Wordle starting words will be STARE for the immediate future; it’s the best option that hasn’t already been an answer, and I’m still hoping to one day score a 1/6.

That didn’t happen here, but a single green A did narrow down the possible solutions to 42, according to WordleBot. That’s not terrible for an opening guess, although SLATE (21), SLANT (25), LEAST (31) and PLATE (24) were all better still.

I didn’t know that I had 42 answers left, of course – WordleBot only tells you that info after the game – but I did know there were almost certainly too many for me to score a 2/6. Instead, I decided to narrow it down further by playing BLIND. Though this couldn’t be the answer it had the advantage of allowing me to play four consonants and an extra vowel.

This proved to be a very good strategy, giving me a green L and yellow I – and leaving me with just two possible answers: CLAIM and FLAIL.

So, which to go for? I couldn’t recall either having been an answer before, so I had a straight 50/50. CLAIM was statistically more likely; it doesn’t have a repeated letter and C is very common at the start. But for no real reason I had a hunch it was FLAIL and guessed correctly. Hopefully the luck was with you too.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
