Wordle today is once again right in the middle of the difficulty level. WordleBot says people are solving it in an average of 4 guesses – which is exactly the same as yesterday.
It’s not too tricky but not super-easy either, so you’ll want one of the best Wordle starting words to get your game off to a great beginning.

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?
• Wordle today has two vowels*.
Getting two vowels in a Wordle answer is a lot more likely than getting one; there are 1,336 Wordle solutions containing two vowels, but only 732 that have one.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

• The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is H.
H is not a particularly common starting letter in Wordle: only 69 games begin with it, and it ranks in 15th place. The last time we had a solution beginning with an H was about a month ago, when HUMAN was the answer to game #573.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle today (game #601) – the answer
The answer to today’s Wordle, game #601, is… HEADY.
So, what do we think of this one then? It’s definitely not the most common word – in fact, the very useful Word And Phrase Info (opens in new tab) website says it ranks 11,487th among all English words, which is way higher than yesterday’s STAGE (830).
It also has a much less common starting letter; H doesn’t occur that often at the front of a Wordle answer, with just 69 games beginning with it. The E, A and D are common, obviously, and Y is the second most likely letter to end an answer – so it’s only really the H that might have been hard to find.
Some of the best Wordle starting words will have helped greatly today. WordleBot’s favorite, SLATE, was pretty good – that left just 12 remaining answers. TRACE and CRATE (both 9) were even better.
My own choice, STARE, narrowed it down to 10 options, although I didn’t identify all of them. I came up with LEAFY, LEAKY, BEADY, MEALY, HEAVY, HEADY, BEACH and PEACH – but missed LEACH and EMAIL.
With so many Y-ending words among my choices, I knew I’d go down that route. I also remembered that BEADY had already been an answer, so discounted that. And I figured that MEALY might not be one either. HEAVY definitely seemed like a likely choice, so I went with that while knowing that it might well leave me with a 50/50 or worse depending on what happened.
Well, today I got lucky – though it wasn’t HEAVY, all but the V turned green, so HEADY was just a guess away for a pleasing 3/6.

The thing is, WordleBot says people are solving this in an average of 4 guesses – which is standard for the game. But I’d be fairly sure we’ll have a lot of 2/6s, loads of 3/6s, and plenty of 5/6s and worse.
As a word, it’s straightforward enough: everyone uses ‘STAGE’ at some, er, stage. And the letters are all pretty common too. G is the only outlier, ranking 17th overall and 12th when used in position #4. But S, T, A and E are all super-frequent visitors to a Wordle answer.
The problem is that STAGE is by no means the only word that fits that letter pattern. If, like me, you started with STARE today you’ll have had five possible solutions left: STALE, STATE, STAKE, STAVE and STAGE. Get lucky and you’ll have walked away with a 2/6, but on the flip side a 6/6 could have been on the cards.
And not all of the best Wordle starting words will have helped that much. WordleBot’s favorite, SLATE, left 4, but its second choice of CRANE resulted in 48 remaining solutions. People starting with that will probably have needed to first find the STA-E bit, and then find that final letter. And that could have left to a failure overall.
I had no such problems, because I did start with STARE and faced nothing worse than a 6/6. Even that was never on the cards, because I remembered that STALE was an answer back in November (game #505), so a 5/6 was my maximum.
I initially tried to narrow down the options by playing a ‘throwaway’ word that couldn’t be right but would guarantee a 3/6, but it just wasn’t possible. I needed a word containing G, K, V and potentially T, and there are none as far as I know. The best I could do was words that contained two of those four letters – for instance GRATE would have ruled in/out STAGE and STATE leaving me with either a definite 3/6 or a possible 4/6 at worst.
Given that 5/6 was only slightly worse than that, I figured I’d instead go all in on the 2/6 and played STATE. Although it has a repeated T it seemed likely just because T is such a common letter. STAGE was the next most likely and gave me my 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
